Episode 331: Nintendo Power

We've talked about Nintendo Power before, but never with an expert who has dedicated himself to tracking down the stories behind the magazine. Well, folks, that's exactly what episode 331 is. Tons of fascinating anecdotes, some outsider knowledge from myself and Bob, and some ridiculously good cover artwork. What more can you ask for?

Description: Jeremy Parish, Bob Mackey, and Art of Nintendo Power (twitter.com/artofnp) curator Stephan Reese take a trip back through gaming's greatest propaganda rag: Nintendo Power. Cover art created by John Pading.

Comments

How wonderful that someone like Stephan Reese is spearheading this effort. I am sure his quest will pay dividends for cultural history. I look forward to the day I can see his finds in person.

I remember those quarterly newsletters before Nintendo Power and when that first issue with the clay Mario on the cover was delivered to me for free, I was over the moon. What I do remember from that era are the rumors and innuendo that hovered over the school yards. Some kids said Zelda was based on a Japanese animated film and the art from the instruction booklet were taken from said film. Seemed plausible back then. There was so much B.S. but without the Internet, there was no way we could verify anything. Maybe a Retronaut episode on false rumors or the most outlandish video game myths?
