Episode 322: Dragon Quest: Your Story

2020 brought us many calamities, but on the bright side, Netflix has a CGI adaptation of Dragon Quest V! (You takes what you gets.) Square-Enix's legendary RPG series rarely receives an animated anything, let alone a direct adaptation of a nearly 30-year-old game, so having this widely available feels truly magical—though there is a bit of a catch. On this episode, join Bob Mackey, Jeremy Parish, Nina Matsumoto, and Henry Gilbert as a crew traces the history of Dragon Quest media adaptations, and then discusses this chunk of animated fan service in full. Thanks again for all of your support!

Be sure to read Nina's newest book: Sparks! Double Dog Dare.

The localized Dragon Quest: Legend of the Hero Abel anime was actually my introduction to the overall series. I remember it running really early on Saturday mornings on my local NBC affiliate- around 6:30~7AM early- so I'd catch bits of it before the regular Saturday morning cartoon offerings on the networks. I eventually set up the family VCR to record it, 'cause it blew my little mind; in addition to introducing me to the greater Dragon Quest universe, it was also my first exposure to anime- well, anime I recognized as being such, at least.

Very strong “FFVII:Remake vibes” coming from this episode, where 95% of it is a positive review until you get to the part where they somehow completely screwed up the ending. I feel this is even worse, as with FFVII you can at least go back and play more of the stuff you like.
