Episode 253: Live from Long Island Retro Gaming Expo

These two segments were recorded live in August at Long Island Retro Gaming Expo. It's a small show, but it's a good one. This year, I presented twice: Once with Hardcore Gaming 101's Kurt and Rob to discuss our affection for unloved game systems, and once with Frank Cifaldi of the Video Game History Foundation and Coury Carlson of My Life in Gaming to talk about the hows and whys of playing old games and using legacy hardware, as well as just how far we'll go to satisfy our particular obsessions.
I know people sometimes cringe about live panels due to poor recording quality, but the audio quality was fantastic on these recordings. If only all live shows could sound this good...

2019-10-12 01:16:05 +0000 UTCRegarding the difference between Virtual Boy US (xtreme 90’s vomit) vs JP boxes (just a clean product shot + logo) - I’m guessing that’s because the box is meant to sit on a Toys R Us shelf and sell someone on the system, which is why you might have stickers for Duracell mail-in rebates and pack-in titles. Apparently there’s something about Japanese retail where they’re fine with just being representational like Apple box designs. But, I guess if you’re IN an Apple store poking at an iPad the decision to buy is driven by in-store product demos and TV ads and the box itself is just meant to display a product shot and the specs+regulatory info.
