Retronauts Episode 198: Dragon Quest XI

Every once in a while, we like to focus our attention on (gasp!) modern games to see how well they've stuck to tradition over the passing decades. And there's no series more traditional than Dragon Quest, which still plays pretty close to how it did 30-some years ago. On this episode of Retronauts, join Bob Mackey,  Jeremy Parish, and Henry Gilbert as the crew takes a look at how Dragon Quest XI--the newest entry in the series--thoroughly modernizes its many old-school qualities for one of the best installments of the series to date.

At the start of the episode, I was wondering just how I managed to get the true ending and do most of the content (crafted everyone's best gear, etc.) at "only" 86 hours. By the end, I realized that it was probably because, for the first time, I didn't bother with the casinos. Great episode! I really like these episodes about modern games with retro sensibilities.

In a recent interview, Sugiyama said that video games have to sound like video games, instead of using orchestral scores. It's probably BS since he's also a board member of JASRAC, the Japanese music rights organization. They're super stingy and litigious so it tracks he just doesn't want orchestral music that he can sell being available to people in game to rip. It was ridiculous that the orchestrated DQXI score was available in a 2-CD pack with the US special edition, but not in game. JASRAC and Sugiyama even had the gall to tell people they couldn't stream or post videos of Dragon Quest XI with the music. Like anybody would actually want to listen to it!

(Great episode, though! Love it when y'all talk about DQ)

Jeremy, how can you not like Rab??? 😞

I bought Dragon Quest V because you guys said it was the best in the series back in your Dragon Quest retrospective episode. I liked the characters and story, but I stalled out around 3 hours in because I really didn't like the combat mechanics. I don't like not being able to call my targets like in Final Fantasy games. I'm about to start it again here very soon, though, because you guys have never steered me wrong.
