Retronauts 174: Dylan Cuthbert's road to StarFox

Hi! Welcome to October! Here's a podcast I recorded in May. [comical music sting]

Yeah, so I've been holding onto this one for a while, but now the story can be told. I had the good fortune to lock down Q-Games boss Dylan Cuthbert for an hour and a half back at BitSummit (thanks to company composer and social media guy and all-around pinch-hitter Mark Lentz!) and we spoke about the journey Dylan took from being a kid wanting to make games to being a kid working in the heart of Nintendo headquarters on technology that shattered the boundaries of the Super NES hardware. From bathtubs full of acid to the influence of ancient shrines on Nintendo game design, there's a lot of interesting stuff here. Enjoy!

I came for the starfox but enjoyed all of the starglider mentions along the way. Great interview. Thank you.

The Devs Play episode with him was rad. Glad to hear more from him.

Have to say again that this ep is AMAZING. FX chip developed that early? The making of 3d on GB??? Wow.

This is an interview that was so great, I'll probably listen to it multiple times. I have never gotten to hear from someone who had direct experience with Yokoi actually talk about it. At least, aside from reading translated interviews.

Curtis Bostick

For some reason, I thought LSD when the description said, "Bathtubs full of acid." Of course it was just industrial strength acid for board design. Silly me.

Phazonmasher

I forgot that there was someone else in the interview until the end.

Love developer interviews! The StarFox animal theme was that Nintendo stroke of genius, since it immediately differentiated the game from the “lone pilot” scenario of Gradius and nearly all shooters. Also making the player part of a team felt very inspired, as it allowed for more narrative and personality through banter, wingmen in distress, etc. Finally that rousing StarFox serenade at each level was oddly effective at creating a “Top Gun pride” of being a squad of flying aces. It’s an all time classic!

Awesome that these stories are coming to light now. Very enjoyable content.
