Micro no more! Retronauts 170 is here to talk Iron Man

Well, it was inevitable. Bob and I have decided to drop the "Micro" naming scheme for our biweekly Friday podcasts. Now they're just... Retronauts. This episode was the camel-back-breaking straw, since it ended up clocking in at 75 minutes, which is frankly long enough to justify being called plain ol' Retronauts.

So, Retronauts is now a... man, what would you call this schedule? Weekly except when it's not? Weekly and semi-weekly on a once-in-a-fortnight rotating schedule? Basically, you're gonna get 6-7 episodes of Retronauts per month, some of which will appear on Fridays and will be shorter than Monday episodes. I dunno, man. If we can get the Patreon numbers up past our next elusive goal, it'll be a lot easier—we can just call it semi-weekly.

Anyway. This week Benj Edwards and Chris Sims join for a fairly goofy episode about Iron Man. As with some of our multi-media-focused episodes, there's not as much discussion centered on actual games... but in this case, that's kind of the point. This episode marks the 10th anniversary of the movie Iron Man, which is the point the character went from being Marvel's highest-profile second-stringer to one of the world's top-5 superheroes; and Iron Man's history in games reflects his decades of B-tier status. Again, Doctor Strange starred in a video game before Iron Man. Doctor. Strange. This, despite Iron Man being the most fundamentally video-game-friendly character in perhaps the entire Marvel pantheon. Dude just couldn't get a break.

I'm sure we're going to get called out for skipping the Capcom Vs. games, where you occasionally did get to play as Iron Man, so I guess we'll just have to do a Vs. episode to make up for it.

Anyway! Hope you don't mind getting this episode a day early—I'm not sure what the power situation in North Carolina will be tomorrow, what with a hurricane striking the coastline as I type this, so I figured I'd get it up early. In a worst-case scenario in which I have no power or internet into next week, I've already passed along Monday's advance episode to Bob to post. And you'll be happy to know that the week after that will finally bring some Bob-hosted episodes, for those of you who are ready for a break from my voice.—Jeremy

Just getting around to listening to this, and I gotta say that the “big” Iron Man thing for me was definitely Civil War. That’s what made me care about Iron Man, about two years before the movie. Cool episode guys!

yeah when Jeremy got to that point and talked about video games with shared universes I almost blurted out "SNKVERSE!" on my crowded train home. There's not much of a story in those games but what little there is brings together a lot of people from different games into one.

Since I know so very little about it, I think a Turok episode would work quite well since there were so many of those games on N64 and I'm still confused how similar they are to their origin comics.

SilverHairedMiddleAgedTuxedoMask

As always super informative. I really enjoyed this episode.

I'm interested in what Chris might consider the current "major" book for Marvel that isn't Star Wars. My gut feeling is that aside from Spidey (and deadpool for a while there) it's been Ms. Marvel and Squirrel Girl.

We only had so much time... and we went way over that allotment as it is!

Retronauts

Surprised nobody really got into Millar/Hitch's Ultimates and Ultimates 2, which is basically the blueprint for the MCU, including the first IM movie. Fast-talking, booze-swilling, five-steps-ahead womanizer Tony Stark was basically reset for those series, and RDJr was practically life imitating art

Retronauts

I'm now imagining a complex enlightenment clockwork for predicting the date of upcoming Retronauts episodes. :)

A Retronauts by any other name is still a Retronauts. As long as I get my weekly fix , I'm all good!

Normallyretro

I say we start calling the regular episodes Micro and expand them to 3 hours for the sheer hilarity of it all.

Eric Plunk

That's cool, though DQ I&II was always conceived as a single episode! We'd have recorded it all at Alex's but misjudged how long it would take to reach Nagoya and ran out of time...

Retronauts

We've decided to avoid calling these episodes anything besides "Retronauts," because giving them any sort of alternate branding sends the message they're less worthwhile than "real" episodes. We don't agree with that viewpoint! These are also real.

Retronauts

Maybe "Retronauts+" as in New Game + or "Retronauts Postgame", since sometimes there's a little more? (Or god forbid, Retronauts DLC)

I know you say that fighting games aren't working towards an end for their shared universe, and you're right. I'm still impressed by SNK for incorporating Metal Slug and Ikari Warriors alongside all their disparate fighting franchises into King of Fighters and having all those universes interact with each other. They aren't working towards anything, but I think it's really the only way you can do shared universes in video games.

Phazonmasher

Awww, I'll miss the micro moniker, unrelated as it is to the length of the episodes.

I echo this sentiment. I hope you and your family aren't affected too much by the impending storm.

Phazonmasher

Good luck Jeremy with the hurricane. Hope it doesn't affect your and your family too much. Thanks for the shows.

Kevin

Just wanted to say - I am 100% fine with shorter episodes being peppered in. I don't think you need to take two other episodes (Like the Dragon Quest 1 & 2), and merge them into one. I'd be just as satisfied with each separately.

Ryan Langley

Love these multi media episodes. Stay safe in NC.
