Retronauts 169: Dragon Quest I & II

The next chapter of the show's steady march through the history of role-playing games has arrived. No creator interview this time, though; Yuji Horii's a little tough to get locked down for a podcast, as you might imagine. But we do our best here, by finding some experts.

For the first segment, Bob and I made the trek out to Nagoya, Japan to talk to retrogaming bar Critical*Hit proprietor Alex Fraioli about the original Dragon Quest. For the second segment, Nadia Oxford Skypes in (again) to talk about the sequel, as hinted at in our most recent mailbag episode. Both Alex and Nadia have been guests of the show from way back in olden times, so it was seemed fitting to have them on for such a baseline kind of topic.

I've played through DQ I and II on mobile and found those ports to be pretty decent. They play well one handed in short bursts while on the bus or waiting in line. The mobile port of DQ II was actually pretty fun and I liked the three party members. This podcast and DQ XI launching is making me pretty excited to play some DQ!

I really enjoy when Alex is on any podcast including No More Whoppers. Very entertaining guy.

I would also love to see a video of Bobโ€™s parrot singing to Dragon Quest music!

I grew up playing the Final Fantasy games primarily. That wound up working out in my favor though. I started discovering the Dragon Quest games with the re-releases on the DS, right around the time I was getting really hungry for classic-style JRPGs that companies like Square Enix didn't seem too interested in anymore. I love the series now and have been gradually working my way through it.

Before Yuji Horii worked on games, he wrote and was an editor on a video games column for Shonen Jump where he apparently met Toriyama. There was an established relationship between the two men long before Dragon Quest happened.

Last week I re-listened to the DQ episode form a few years back because I had just played DQ1+2 on ios. Amazing timing, can't wait to listen to this.

Always great to hear Alex talk about ANY version of a game called "Dragon Quest."

I truly treasure my Game Boy Color copy of these games. Looking forward to this!
