Episode 162: Wizardry - Podcast Chat of the Mad Overlord

Here's one that's been on my "dream podcasts" list for ages โ€” a full-length interview with Robert Woodhead, formerly of Sir-Tech, and one of the two visionaries behind the Wizardry series... which is to say, one of the most influential role-playing designers of all time. This was recorded back in March and I've been holding onto it until after the USgamer feature on Wizardry went live, but it's been tough to keep this under wraps. It's an interesting conversation with a video game legend.

Having come from both a retrogame and anime background from years back, this episode was a real treat. Also your sneaky question about Macross 7 had me cracking up in the car, and he seemed absolutely thrown off by it but recovered beautifully :)

This is now one of my favorite Retronauts episodes. Thank you!

I had no idea about the his involvement with Animeigo! Animeigo was my main introduction to anime that wasn't shown on American television. What a fun surprise!

Everyday Patrick

Great interview, lots of interesting insights and anecdotes

Matt from Hidden Machine

I went to U of Illinois for CS and passed a PLATO terminal under glass every day and never knew what it was and why it was significant

Much as I've enjoyed the movie/pop culture podcasts its content like this that makes me bug my friends to listen in. Excellent stuff, keep up the good work.

Ha! Found a manual http://www.gamesdatabase.org/Media/SYSTEM/Apple_II/manual/Formated/Wizardry-_Proving_Grounds_of_the_Mad_Overlord_-_1981_-_Sir-tech_Software.pdf Huh? Apple Pascal operating system? The game runs in 48k so I can imagine how a spell table can be hard to include in full.

John Simon

He's so modest, but really...his game was influential by more than just chance--no disrespect. But its really awesome to see his humility.
