Retronauts Episode 155: Nintendo GameCube

Nintendo followed up the modest success of the N64 with the GameCube: A small, sleek little system devoted solely to playing games. But in an era where the PlayStation 2's exclusives, backwards compatibility, and DVD playback features obliterated the competition, Nintendo found their nice little piece of hardware unable to gain any true traction. On this episode of Retronauts, join Bob Mackey, Kat Bailey, Jeremy Parish and Dave Rudden as the crew explores the console best known as "half of a Wii but without the duct tape:" the Nintendo GameCube.

Retronauts Episode 155: Nintendo GameCube

Gamecube! I was a huge fan of Rogue Squadron and Battle for Naboo on N64 and went to one of Nintendo's preview events just to play the game as early as possible. I didn't care about PS2 or Xbox, but I was super hyped for Nintendo that year (at least until GTA III blew up). This was also the first platform I bought at launch. I pre-ordered from the Gamestop at the mall where I worked, but a poorly timed tonsillectomy meant I was under orders to stay in. I had to wait for everyone to leave the house so I could sneak out and pick it up without being scolded. I spent a glorious week in bed eating ice cream and playing Rogue Leader.

Episode was pretty delightful to listen to, especially since the GameCube was my first home console. I'm also currently in the process of HDifying my GameCube, and was wondering if any of you have tried using homebrew to improve the output quality of the GameBoy player? It seems less intense than RGB-modding a Super Nintendo in order to improve the output of the Super GameBoy. http://retrorgb.com/gameboyinterface.html

Listen to the reeeeally old episodes if you want to hear people talking over each other. 😚 I love old and new Retronauts, including the interruptions and apologies. This show has grown into something fantastic.

After reading this comment, I was ready for some primo oppression at 16:25! What I heard was four adults having a conversation, and occasionally apologizing if someone was spoken over. In any case, really enjoyed the ep...The GCN was the first TV-consuming system my family permitted in the house (game gears/boys only prior to this), so the peek under the hood was appreciated. Relieved that Dave, Jeremy and Kat were also able to grip the handle--was briefly worried I had baby hands.

I did notice it a little early in the episode but I think things improved. Dave also seemed to have trouble getting a word in edgewise at times. I would say not egregious but something to be mindful of in the future.

I haven't listened to this episode specifically so I can't comment on it, but this is something I've noticed happening on this show in the past, to be honest. I think it's gotten better over time (again, haven't listened to this ep yet), but it's definitely a trend I've heard before.

Matt Bixler! Hello!

After the first remark Kat makes there, it takes her four tries to speak again. And it's not just this part of the episode, or just this episode. It seems to me that Kat gets cut off really frequently when she's on the show, much more so than any other co-host.

I went to the specified time, heard Jeremy accidentally interrupt Kat, then he realized that and let her talk. I'm not sure what the problem is?

Bob Mackey

egregious adj outstandingly bad; shocking I stand by my choice of words.

Jesse Onland

is this sarcasm or has the word egregious lost all meaning

Killer 7 music in a break? I knew Retronauts had taste. Also, Sega porting Skies of Arcadia to the GCN was such a get, but it was hard for me to see Xbox getting Panzer Dragoon Orta and Jet Set Radio Future when I only had a GCN back then.

Phazonmasher

Why have Kat on if you're going to cut her off over and over every time she tries to say anything? Listen to the sequence starting at 16:25. It's really egregious.

Jesse Onland

What's the song from 10:30?
