By my count, this marks the 250th episode of Retronauts since we relaunched with the Kickstarter campaign in 2013. Fittingly for this milestone in numeration, we have a pretty significant episode… well, for me, at least. I've been trying to pull together a sit-down interview with Shantae director Matt Bozon for years and years, and it finally worked out last month.
Matt was kind enough to invite me down to WayForward's offices in Santa Clarita, where he spoke candidly about the history of Shantae (which stretches way back in the Super NES era) for 90 minutes. It's an on-site interview, so the audio quality isn't studio-grade, but it's a wonderful and candid interview packed with really interesting information about ’90s game dev that goes far beyond the Shantae games. And to think it almost didn't happen — the day after I recorded this interview, the WayForward offices were nearly engulfed by wildfire! (Everything turned out OK, but one day's difference would have been disastrous for this specific appointment.)
Enjoy! — Jeremy
