Retronauts Episode 130: The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker

In a generation where games strove to be gritty, photorealistic, and more "mature," The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker dared to be boldly cartoony, and suffered greatly at the hands of console warriors. Yet, close to 15 years laterโ€”and with the help of an HD remakeโ€”Link's seafaring GameCube adventure is remembered quite fondly. On this episode of Retronauts, join Bob Mackey, Jeremy Parish, Kat Bailey, and Matthew Jay as the crew explores just how this GameCube game went from reviled to treasured.

Special thanks to backer Jenny Nielsen for funding the production of this episode!

I definitely think that One Piece is another slight influence on the scope of this game.

They did actually remaster the music for the HD version. The difference is fairly subtle in most tracks, but compare for example the Molgera boss theme: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wlF0-Qs2xkI https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OI8D3rdpjuM

Great episode. I went to the 25th anniversary concert in London. There was actually some talk online and around the venue that Koji and Eiji wouldn't be coming out on stage because of that LA performance, and that the VIP Q&A would be cut short. Thankfully the Hammersmith Apollo was on polite form that night, and both guests seemed very humbled. Zelda Williams was also there compering, and had already spoken movingly of her relationship with the series and her father. By the end of Grandma's theme, there wasn't a dry eye in the house.
