Episode 125: The Final Fantasy Legend

Hi everyone! We're back on our regular schedule, and this week we have another patron request episode. This one hits on the early SaGa games — that is, Final Fantasy Legend 1-3 (and their siblings, Final Fantasy Mystic Quest and Final Fantasy II). Special guest Shane Bettenhausen joins us for this glimpse into the mouth of Akitoshi Kawazu's madness!

Description: By patron request, we continue our Final Fantasy deep dive series by looking at a trilogy of RPGs that… aren't part of the series? The Final Fantasy Legend spun off from Final Fantasy II, but they became their own thing almost immediately.

Final Fantasy Legend III was a favorite when I was a kid. Got another copy from my wife for Christmas last year and I really wanted to dive back into it sometime. Love old handheld RPGs in general. Side note: I'd love to listen to an episode about the Dragon Quest Monster games for GB.

Well, this made me feel like a gaming super-hero; I had Final Fantasy Legend as a kid, and I remember beating it multiple times (that and Gargoyle's Quest are maybe my two strongest "sense memory" games). I'd get pickier about weird systems as I got older, but back then, I just sort of rolled with everything. The monster mutation stuff fascinated me, and I can still remember a level late in the game which was a ghost town with only one, at first unbeatable, enemy; when you're just walking around normal, you have to run from every encounter because you can't win any of them. Later on you get a hoverbike and don't have to worry about it as much, but I remember how scary that level of the tower was the first time I stumbled on it.

oh man I love all this Kawazu stuff --- super interesting, weird systems.... he's just misunderstood!! but Jeremy understands!
