Early access: Episode 104 - Gradius

Hello, all. Apologies for the mild tardiness on this advance posting — we had some minor scheduling confusion… but that's what content backlogs are for. We recorded this Gradius episode with the HG101 crew the day before our Long Island live panel (which you've already heard by now), and it turned out quite well! I do apologize for the slightly percussive audio quality in places... since I had to transport recording gear for four, I didn't have room for pop guards, and so those darned letter Ps are a little harsher than I would prefer. Despite that minor quirk and the low throb of muscle cars in the background (sigh), the episode turned out quite well, and I'm kind of surprised it's taken us this long to tackle one of gaming's greatest shooter franchises. Please enjoy, and look forward to your regularly scheduled Bob episode next Monday. — JP

Description: Kurt Kalata and Rob Russo join us from Hardcore Gaming 101 to delve into the history of Konami's legendary Gradius series. From its prequel (Scramble) to its most recent spinoff (Otomedius), we blast our way through the span of the entire series!

Nice episode! Thorough breakdown of all the games themselves. I'd like to add that the Gradius/Salamander games had some of the best and most iconic box art of the 8-bit generation. And I was also waiting for you guys to mention the Vic Viper cameo (with accompanying) music in Zone of the Enders 2. Gradius 5 is indeed a great game, but at the time I never picked it up as I saw it as a somewhat less appealing Treasure follow up to the phenomenal Ikaruga which had been my obsession for months.

I am surprised that no one mentioned Sin & Punishment: Star Successor as an example of Treasure's later games, especially upon knowing that the Hardcore Gaming 101 people are fans of that game. I guess that game is so obscure that even people who like it forget that it exists.

If I can listen to you guys' episodes recorded in a reverberated vault, I definitely don't mind a little popping p's Lol! Thanks for yall attention to detail, though.

awesome episode as per. don't wanna sound like a spoiled brat but I would love to hear you guys' take on the Goemon series, particularly the SFC games. I'm guessing you tend to stay away from Japan-only releases but I really think it's a fascinating franchise with at least 2 pretty stellar games in it and easily some of the best videogame soundtracks ever. I've been listening to Retronauts for the past 5 years and occasionally go through archive.org for the primordial stuff and Goemon really does seem to be one of the very few major franchises you guys have yet to cover. Thank you for the amazing work. You guys humble me everyday!

I can confirm that the PSP Gradius collection definitely works on Vita, as it's been my default "doctor's waiting room" play since Vita launch. It does require a PS3 sideload, but it's eminently playable and IMO works better than it does on PSP.

Good luck to you!
