Comments

Growing up, my local video store had a bootleg version of SMB3 as well. It also had the infamous 31-in-1 multicart available to rent. It's weird to think how open and common that NES bootlegging was. The attitude to software (and other media) piracy in those days was "If I can do it easily, then it's okay." That attitude only changed (slightly) when the internet made it TOO easy.

I seem to remember the frog suit being great on ice

This is almost completely tangential, but there is a fantastic documentary about the rise and fall of Morton Downey Jr. called Evocateur. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1822381/ It's worth a watch for anyone eager to see a reactionary TV blowhard get drummed out of public life.

"We're all trying to 1UP each other." Nice one, Bob!

I know this sounds like one of those "my uncle that works for Nintendo story..." because I can't find any reference to collaborate this anywhere online, but I have a very vivid memory of the Japanese version of SMB3 being available to rent from Blockbuster prior to the game being available in the US and my neighbor up the street had rented it and had hooked the NES to their living room TV, where we left it on for 2 days playing through it. I clearly remember the text in the game no being translated and of course being in absolute shock when reaching world 4 and everything is giant. The game came out a few months later and I got it then for my birthday. But I'm sure I played it a few months earlier, before it came out, I've just never been able to corroborate it with any reference to it being available this way.

Thanks! - Bob

I know why Boo is called Teresa in Japan! It's a pun, as 照れる ("tereru") means "to be shy"

Episodes like this are worth the patreon every time (not that it wouldn't be otherwise). Live notes via Jeremy was great. Perfect group of people for this game. Deep exploration into franchises like this are wonderful

Jason Lynch

Third whistle is in W2. Use the hammer to reveal a hidden Mushroom house, Firebro

So happy to have Ray back on the podcast again, fantastic work guys.

Glad you saved this episode for this cast. Most dopest.

Mark Lentz

Amazing. Love this format.

Yeah, these reexaminations of giant classic games have become some of my favorite Retronauts episodes. I love learning about things I've taken for granted; like, Jeremy's speculation about the repeated theme of infant characters was something I had never picked up on.

Jeff Wiggins

Fantastic episode. Loving and detailed look into one of the all time greats. Would love more in this vein on other classics (time for a new Chrono Trigger episode perhaps?).

Kormakur Gardarsson

one of the best games, period.
