Early access: Retronauts episode 107 — SEGA pt. 2

Hello, all — here is this week's advance episode, stealthily submitted in between bursts of patriotic fireworks. It's a follow-up to an episode from a few months ago. Enjoy!

Description: Jeremy, Ben, and Benj convene again to continue their discussion of SEGA's chronology of arcade classics. This time, we take aim at the years 1986 & ’87, with greats like Out Run, After Burner, Quartet, Alien Syndrome, and more!

You guys were wondering if Quartet actually existed in U.S. arcades --- there was one at a summer camp I went to near Philadelphia in the late 80s/early 90s. I remember being absolutely fixated on this arcade machine, and would constantly try to sneak in plays with friends. I was psyched to hear Jeremy include the amazing level 1 music at the top of the show!

Yeah to all of this!

Yu Suzuki is like the video game ID of 80s powerhouse Japan. All fast cars, motorcycles and blazing jet planes. Had he been american he probably would have directed Stallone movies during this era. :) Outrun is simply wonderful, but I am also glad you mentioned Ridge Racer Type 4 in the same conversation. There is definitely a kindred spirit between these titles as both were racing games that transfixed me despite my complete lack of interest in cars and motor-sport. Outrun and Type-4 are sort of dream-like experiences where you enter a wistful world, or a general vibe, and just glide through beautiful environments while listening to a stellar soundtrack. Like "Drive" in video game form or some stylish Michael Mann movie. I wish more car games would go for this type of holistic experience and focus less on the minutiae of engine parts or authentic brands. I am European as well and I always assumed that Outrun took place in Miami or Florida someplace. Ferrari's had the Miami Vice connection after all. I played both After Burner and ThunderBlade in the full on swiveling chair cabinets and it was indeed awesome. I hope you guys keep talking about SEGA arcades well into the late 90s. There's just so much good stuff.
