Early access: Retronauts 106 - Final Fantasy V

Another really great episode this week! Although... I kinda feel like I say that just about every time I post these days. I guess that means I'm happy with the way the show's going or something.

Anyway, this resumes the Final Fantasy deep-dive series we started last year, following on from March's Final Fantasy IV episode. Next up, of course, is Final Fantasy V; Square may have passed over it back in the day, but this game is way too good for us to skip. And we've called in some experts: Shivam Bhatt, formerly of 1UP and Sony, and naturally Chris Kohler. Chris literally wrote the book on FFV, and in fact you'll be hearing more about that very soon!

While this episode was timed to coincide with Chris's announcement, but a happy bit of luck it also falls into place with the Final Fantasy V Four Job Fiesta. If you don't know what that is, look it up! And join in! I'll be streaming my own run through the coming weeks. For now, though, please enjoy this very good podcast. — Jeremy

Description: Our 30th anniversary deep-dive series continues with the fifth entry in the Final Fantasy franchise, the 16-bit cult obsession Final Fantasy V. Bob and Jeremy are joined by pop culture pundit Shivam Bhatt and Chris Kohler, who wrote the book on the game.

Was inspired between this and Four Job Fiesta to finally give FFV a go. Great game! It's both simple and complex at the same time. It also boggles my mind that it came out in 1992, just one year after IV. (Even FFIV I first played around 1994 when a friend bought it used). Interesting to compare to what DOS games I was playing in 1992 when my father brought his work PC home for summer. Or maybe I just feel old.

The best thing about Red Mages is their awesome hats obviously. Come on guys.

I'm doing 4 Job Fiesta right now, Chaos run! Thankfully my first two jobs have been Ranger and Summoner so once I get all the crystals it shouldnt be bad, but grinding levels as Freelancer is not fun.

Exciting, and even more excited for FFVI to follow, since it was the subject of my MA thesis!

I've been looking forward to this since the IV episode. Hot damn, thank y'all. <3
