A look at SEGA's in the ’80s arcade

Hi everyone, it's your weekly early access experience. This week is another Retronauts East, and while this new setup situation isn't completely sorted out just yet, we're getting closer to parity with Retronauts West. The conversation and the sound quality are a lot sturdier this time around than last, and I've ordered the last new equipment we'll need to bring everything up to code for next time.

This East installment once again sees Ben E. and Benj E. (yes, it's confusing to me, too) join in and chat about SEGA in the arcade throughout the ’80s. Well, that was the plan, anyway... but since I wanted to touch on big hits and interesting obscurities alike, we only made it through 1985 before we ran out of time. Soooo... we'll just have to put together a second episode hitting the second half of the ’80s, eh?

A lot of the games we cover here, especially in the first hour, are pretty deep cuts that we've only read about, played in collections, or experienced through emulation, so we admittedly approach most of them from the perspective of newcomers and outsiders. Once you get to 1984 and ’85, though, the games grow more familiar, and our conversation warms up as the games become more popular. Please stick with it! It all pays off, I promise. And the ’86-’90 episode is gonna be boss. Man, I can't wait for that one.

Description: Ben Elgin and Benj Edwards reconvene with Jeremy to explore the first half of SEGA's arcade output. Like the games we're discussing, the episode starts off a bit shaky, but everything is awesome by 1985. Pengo! Zaxxon! Space Harrier! Hang On! And more!

@EricRouleau -Day of the Tentacle was fascinating too because it actually contextualized the previous game, and made it part of the environment - to say nothing of the fact that it took the NES version and DotT was a PC game! I like this idea!!

After hearing this episode, I thought of an idea for a micro topic. Retronauts Inception, talking about games within games. Shenmue was actually my first exposure to Space Harrier and Hang-On. It was also one of the best features in Animal Crossing. This might be a crazy idea for an episode, but it would be cool to hear about some deeper, older examples of this (I'm sure they are out there).

This episode was rough because I had to record across two different apps with an infinitesimal speed difference. Awful. There's a shiny new 12-bus mixer here on my desk that's gonna change all of that, though.

Can't wait for the sound quality to improve. This episode was sorely lacking in that department. Also, man you guys need to do your Colecovison homework! Turbo did in fact come to the Colecovison, with an optional steering wheel expansion pack with pedal! Turbo was fantastic for its environments - driving in tunnels and at night (am I remembering that correctly) looked amazing in the arcades back then.

Red Oak is, of course, the only proper beer to drink.

Love me some SEGA! Hope we get a follow up on SEGA's monumental arcade 90s. :) Or an episode chronicling the games of Yu Suzuki.

Yes. Finally some SEGA. lmao!
