Just Rolled With It | RIPTIDE #108

THE COUNCIL DISCUSSES EP 108 OF RIPTIDE.

Comments

It’s typical JRWI Rolled shenanigans.

Jezzibolt

Nicklaus is a canonical jrwi listener

Xéphen

It's the way bizzly was silent for like 20 min, I started wondering if he left

Allofakind

the end of this rolled was so very normal.

bizlyfan

your dead

RAND0MISER

You’ve been chosen as a comment

Shadow Cosmos314

I would have Nicklaus offer her a easier way to resurrect the dread queen but, with a horrible cost . He could also offer to get them out but only the 3 player characters leaving everyone ,including their other crew members, and depositing them on their ship

Lunatic4hire

Great rolled it felt unhinged in the most entertaining way

Atticcouch

This was probably my favorite riptide fight. Great ep

Atticcouch

Venom jelqing discussion was very incitefull and thought-provoking 🤔

SirSkoden

Amateur dm take: if they get sacced which seems likely, they could wake up as some kind of slave to the captain, bound magically, and might have to do some terrible things for the captain for the next couple episodes, perhaps they could plan a way out, or a Deus ex machina could occur after severe consequences are inflicted (or maybe even Niklaus could bail them out). Idk this is what I’d do, lemme know what y’all think!

Jackbytheway

Ok, you know how the captain asked for an arm and a leg right? Well jays reflection in the hall of mirrors has her missing one of her legs, you could always touch back on that 🤷🏻‍♂️ I still have to listen to the rest of the episode so I could be repeating something that’s been said, but jay has to lose a leg at some point, and Gillion, a hand

Jake Veltkamp

Best fucking rolled ever

lostincarcosa

you know the situation is desperate when "maybe Desire Daddy is parosocial" is one of the scenarios in consideration

Avundius Aaablya

I guess Gillian could still not know what it is and might have heard the saying from chip at some point

CartoonDeathTrap

Alright guys CONTINUITY ERROR TIME!!! In Episode 102 "Happy Wife, Happy Life" Gillion asks Chip what glue is after Chip says that Gillion is the group's glue. BUT, in Episode 90 "21 Ton Salute" Gillion says to Kira: "I'm rubber, you're glue. Whatever you say bounces off of me and sticks back to you." How would Gillion have known what glue was then, but not now?

MythicalGrubbin

that sounds awesome and is a really cool idea but I low-key feel like its more climactic than the fight should be.

ziggy

I kina have a cool idea (tho very difficult to execute) so i might as well share it. What if after someone from the crew dies (e.g. chip) they get brought back kina like edge of tomorrow type beat (the queen already has established time powers so maybe tie them to the black sea), but if someone else dies in that parallel restarted universe they're they only ones that remember what happened in that single scinario + whatever chip told them. And every death would give a point of corruption like in ds3. I feel like it'd be kina lengthy and very difficult to act out but maybe there's something here

Firn

I think if everyone gets sacked maybe have it where one of them would wake up to one of the Npc’s is cutting open the sack and then maybe do a little bit of the sneaky

Mephobia Man

I fear the day Chip convinces the Goobleck on their ship to turn into his Venom Symbiote

Donum

Dude i listen to these episodes at work. the amount of times ive jsut been hearing absolutely henious shit while pushing orders is astounding.

Finnren

fuck it we ball? More like fuck it we fall...back. lets get the fuck outta here

Handful of Rat

bitb ending was gas wym

Michael

Celestine would maybe be a good choice if you are going for a deus ex machina route

Swuiser

Naw they got it trust

Lex Hidlebaugh

I'm a bit late to this, but I think majority wise people really don't want a tpk. It just feels like a waste of a slowburn story campaign. You're at a point in the story where so much is up in the air and hinted at details yet to be explained. As far as ideas that you can use to avoid the tpk, there's currently 3 NPCs on route to the party's location that we the audience, and that the players, don't know the capabilities of. Maybe you can finagle some things there. OR Star seems to have been hinted as being a Cleric (idk for sure, but seems pretty on the nose). Clerics have access to the spell "Word of Recall" (a 6th lvl spell) which lets them teleport themselves and up to five willing creatures to a predesignated "sanctuary" (like a temple dedicated to their god). It's not unreasonable to think there's one of these temples somewhere on the island. Plus, this still leaves the party with consequences. There's way more than 5 people there. People are getting left behind. The spell also has a 5ft range, this shifts the objective from "take as many out with us as possible" to "keep everyone up long enough for us to get out and get as many people close to the cleric as possible". It makes the survival of the party feel a lot more earned as opposed to Deus ex Machina-y. Ik Star doesn't have her focus rn, but there's also no longer a camera on her right now if you know what I mean *wink wink*.

MetallicFlames

A bit late to this, but I think they should be saved by the gold fish because of their massive debt being unpaid

LuciTuci

Deus ex goobleck. (he ate the sun)

Wafflesir168

I think let it go how's it gonna go, they have npcs to help that are coming and if worse comes to worse everyone books it and a few npcs and maybe a PC dies

Quentin

I have to be so real rn. If this ends in a TPK after them finding the window dimension, Chip getting a thing from the black rose pirates, Jay finding out the tree is connected to her mom’s life force, and Gillion just now getting there? I’d be so mad as a viewer. Obviously actions have consequences but you’re also telling a story so that would be the most despicable way to end this. Like with Bitb I was upset that the ending was so cloudy but I understood from the story standpoint that it made sense. Even THAT is more preferable to just everyone dying. While divine intervention is sort of a cop out, it wouldn’t be out of place for them. Gillion quite literally has a divine prophecy he has to complete and all of them have deals with Niklaus and when he got Gillion he straight up said “Can’t have you dying before I cash in that favor” which just straight up implies that Gillion (and by proxy the others) aren’t ALLOWED to die. The Captain even said she doesn’t have any interest in killing his “play things.” Like obviously have that intervention come at a cost. Star is a cleric, she could use her life as exchange for the help. Not only would it hurt them emotionally but it would make a huge point of contention with Igneous and Zamnia. They’d at that point realize that they fucked up beyond measure and the fact that they made rash decisions got somebody they were meant to be saving, killed. Idk I’m just saying that it would be beyond disappointing to have a TPK. Having something happen to save them but at a great price? That’s at least a way to keep the story going while having them face consequences for their actions. I’ve never run a campaign before but i do love story telling. I’m in the process of making my own campaign and of course it’s not gonna be nearly as long as Riptide but I did make the fall back plan for when my players die. The way I plan on running it is that if they die they end up with an x somewhere permanently on their body. That x signifies that they’ve died and their hit point maximum drops by whatever number I determine. They get to keep playing but the more they die the easier it is for them to be killed. I’m definitely NOT saying do this. That would be ridiculous for this type of campaign. What I am saying is that as the DM if you don’t want your story to end in a certain way you have all the power to find ways around the situation. I just think their are more story driven things you can do to avoid a TPK. Edit: Hearing Bizly say how much he wants to be edged by Carnage is NOT what I expected in this rolled what the hell 💀💀💀

DeeDeDeeDee

Can we have a riptide beach episode after this man

Elkay EzH20 Lzs8wslk Filtered Water Filling Station

Couldn't agree more.

Gunkymunkyspunk

Once episode 109 is out so that there can be writing about the designs without spoilers as to what happens in the upcoming episode.

Just Roll With It

eddie brock and venom have canonically fucked in the comics

scrimmyjim

It would be thematic for Niklaus to show up as a Deus Machina, if i remember correctly we haven't seen him for a while so it would make a bit of sense. Also thematically and in context of everything, a Deus Machina in this situation would be much better than a sudden TPK here. Also 'divine' intervention as a Deus Machina with consequences could work, say hypothetically the cleric got her arcane focus either roll divine intervention or use an upcasted command spell or hold person spell and held off the enemy crew for a turn for the riptide pirates and friends to escape knowing that they themselves wont survive this. Realistically there will have been no stakes for the crew but the emotional impact will be lasting on their characters knowing that they aren't truly invincible and running heads first into things will have lasting consequences [the cleric gets 'sacked' and maybe the druid as well]. Also for added stakes, chase ruling for combat to escape the mansion alive. Only thing is that it'll take 3-4 rounds of combat for them to get there cause unlike Gillion, they cant travel 180ft in one round, unless dimension door is used and i dont know how many of those she has left in her. Luckily you can specify a direction for dimension door to work "It can be a place you can see, one you can visualize, or one you can describe by stating distance and direction, such as 200 feet straight downward or upward to the northwest at a 45-degree angle, 180 feet." then it'll instead take 1-2 rounds Also a third less interesting thing you could do is force an ultimatum from Jay by knocking Gillion down down putting both Gillion and Chip into death saves giving Jay one last chance to “do this in a way where no one has to die” and take Jay’s arm and leg as a power play of ‘I want to show you and your friends what you helped me create after the end of your fruitless fighting’

Law01

Are we ever gonna get the art downloads for the spider crew?

FunkyFlumph

alright gang chips gonna edge next episode

King Dorgo

A Deus Machina might not be ideal and it might not be great and if there is an alternative that can be done or at least some sort of consequence for a Deus Machina then its good. But I'm just going to say, a deus Machina is still INFINATELY better than a sudden tpk, Even for a home game but especially for public dnd podcast. The Dm, the players and the viewers will get absolutely nothing out of a TPK

Jam'ez

However Grizzly plays it, I know it’s going to be good. His DM style is my favorite because he’s able to tell a good story while keeping the threat of player death real. I think the way Charlie DMs is more true to the game but that can make things kind of open and shut with no room to creatively get out of a tough spot. That worked really well for BITB because the world was really grounded but I don’t think the style would fit the Riptide world.

Aerbear

I think something about the last five minutes of this should be…. Like… Illegal. To hear without consent. Jesus Christ.

ScarletTheDragon

I usally like to hide a weak point somewhere in an encounter

Fright Knight

Jay uses her eye beam and destroyes the main sac

Fright Knight

I think that would be the ultimate price to pay

Isiaha Love

You could tpk or have them take jay and Chip. Jay and chip would have to roll to convince gillain to leave and full fill the his destine. Or murder them and have gobleck transport him back to Ollie and they have to go on a quest back to resurrect them.

Isiaha Love

I actually full disagree, giving divine intervention IS a Deus Ex Machina still, the players are going in with the full intent to die in this type of place, they know the danger, and they choose this regardless. Actions to consiquences. If they continue to fight, they knew the risks of fighting these people they knew they were so much stronger then them, afterall just one of them required an entire team (the collector) so they went into this KNOWING the stakes. You shouldent de-escilate the stakes by giving divine intervention (including by level up.) A TPK isnt the most satisfiying end sure, but it also makes perfect sence for the situation the players put themselves IN. Its not like they didint have a choice and were not warned and didint know the danger. If they get TPK'd I wouldent mind much, id rather there be consiquences to actions. Rather then just partial, in reality these are people with TIME STOP. They can DESTROY them in a turn, rather in a meteor swarm, Earthquake, Prismatic Wall, Sotmr of Vengeance, Weird, (Im excludeing Wish and Power Word Kill as they have mentioned before those are pretty cheap spells and I do agree.) The only way where this is really escapeable is to FLEE, and if they refuse to do that then a TPK is fully deserved and IS A SUFFICENT END TO A STORY. Trying to rewrite the ending of YOUR STORY because OTHERS wont like the end is complete bullshit. The story wrote itself so they would die as they did not flee. Thats all.

SkywardStar

can't wait for the last episode of riptide next week!

scrimmyjim

An idea I had was they all get sacked, and during the sackedge Gillian has some sort of divine awakening, and has to get chip and jay the FUCK out

ziggy

As far as DM feedback goes, I honestly think Grizzly did great this episode, I wouldn't consider him too lenient or too harsh. I think the cannon ball sized hole ruling was a tad bit harsh, I think it could've easily been a torso sized hole and made perfect sense. Otherwise I don't know what I would do differently. Also, I might be stupid, but I do not feel this situation is impossible. I think If the crew starts running early on next episode I think they can escape with few deaths and live to fight another day. I think somebody will die, I don't think all of them will (unless everyone rolls badly). Also, divine intervention can come in the form of a level up, as they went through a lot just to get to the crew. They may not have "earned" it necessarily, but it is an alternative to Deus Ex Machina that still puts the pressure on the players to use their new tools wisely. It certainly beats just killing the whole crew and ending the entire campaign abruptly. Personally, I realized as they were trekking through the city (probably around the mossy corridor) that this whole situation probably wasn't winnable. I don't think there was a way for the players, at current level, to beat this crew after fighting through the city. It's just too unbalanced. And the price for them trying to take this crew on is losing somebody. It could be one of the players or a couple of the NPCs, but I think the players should face the difficult decision to cut their losses if they want to live. They could try to flee, regroup, and make a better plan of attack, or they can throw in the towel and just move on to finding Arlin. But I still vehemently disagree that this has to end in a TPK. And as long as the players don't resign themselves to the mentality of "this is it, this is the end", then I don't think it will end that way. It feels like so many people have already said it, but, 𝗮 𝗧𝗣𝗞 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗮𝗯𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗲 𝗪𝗢𝗥𝗦𝗧 𝘄𝗮𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗲𝗻𝗱 𝗮 𝗰𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗶𝗴𝗻. It is fulfilling to no one and it provides no closure. I don't think you necessarily need some deity to swoop in and save the day, but that would still be preferable to just letting them all die. Unless the players act really stupid, I think somebody will make it out. And somebody is all you need. Best of Luck to you all!!!

Gunkymunkyspunk

Probably during oct

Kel :]

Something with Chip’s Compass, doing something like what happened with Ollie and transforming him into a fucking monster that’s gonna be like, the best captain *ever*

Vyrion-157

If only Felipe was here. He could save them.

Nate Voelker

Yeah, this is one of the hardest dilemmas I can imagine trying to dm for. Natural progression calls for a tpk, but of course both from a dm/show perspective you really don't want that to happen. And that's especially hard to pull off because every decision they made just put them in even worse circumstances. I feel like with Gillion's arrival at the end of this episode lies a crossroads. One road is some kinda sort of last ditch effort, we fight to the end, and likely die. I imagine the only way to take down the crew is killing the Captain, but I really think you didn't expect them to do that, and that this entire crew was built to be stronger for a future conflict, mainly based on what you said regarding the Dread Queen coming back in this Rolled. The other road would be like, some final deal. And it would have to be huge. Because while I feel like the party is play things to the Captain and her crew, they've also just demonstrated they have a massive potential, having not only survived for as long as they have, but also Gillion showing up early (I would think of this in the Dread Queen's head, these are worrying indicators all around). They're already so willing to kick our asses, and they're doing well considering the circumstances. Hell, even the crew is putting up a good fight, even without clear direction. It's clear they aren't just rookies, and they have the potential to be something far worse for us given the time and resources. That kinda thing, you know? And if she is going to make a deal at this point, I feel like it should have a lot more clauses to it. Things that guarantee more success in the future to this crew. Though, I wouldn't know how to pull that off myself, especially considering I'm not the dm and don't have any other context besides what the players see. But Grizzly, good job man! You're really trying and your players are not making it easy on you, lmao. Good luck, I'm excited to see where this goes!! 💙

Grrafe

Ive just assumed in October, like how they did with bitb, but whomst knows! they've not officially said anything

Bluie

I think my best idea to avoid a TPK would be to force the party to split up. Bring the ceiling down. Gardak is just out there already hitting columns anyway, use that cockiness and other enemies/battles area damage to your advantage. Force the party apart and have them roll for who they end up nearby, how many exit points there are and which enemy/enemies/ no enemy they end up near.

Jcat379

Sounds like they're ah their fricked... I was hoping I can jump into this with them having a plan nope... Yeah I never played D&D before but uh. I'll tell you what. Either Jesus Christ or some type of God is helping. I feel like I can speak with all of us when I say I don't want you guys to end up in sacs... It's like losing your hardcore world cuz you know you can't get it back without some BS. I'm sure grizzly has a really cool plan to get them all out of the situation. Without them just becoming sacs. I just got to do some praying... I really want this to end in a cool way where they don't die and be known to be rookie bad pirates so uh good luck crew

Coco

Maybe I'm crazy and missed something but when is the suckening?

Carl T

charlie sounds like he really wants the pcs to die next episode 😭

RowboatTheBoat

okayy um anyways,,, about the albatrio getting sacked in the meat ball,,, if someone does get sacked, is death immediate? because if it isn't, then they can all get sacked, and then attempt to get out of it with a time limit and run away? trying to escape the meat sacks and then secretly running away (stealth or chase) makes more sense story-wise to me..

tora

?????!!!! BIZLY????!!!!!!! AYOOOOO

tora

Honestly as a DM I'm not sure how I'd run the next session because im with grizzly where I'm not sure I would be comfortable doing a tpk because it would just fucking suck lmao, and in my story their at a point where them dying and a new character popping in just wouldn't work not only that but I love the shit out of my players characters

The tincan man

commenting down below and kindly requesting an update on when u guys think the suckening might be uploaded pretty pls

Nolan Carlsen

If they all die I'm not gonna lie. My personal limit is probably one of them dying if two or all of them die I'd just be really disappointed. I'd still watch whatever gets put out by you guys tho.

Regerts

carnage edging is so much worse.

theo!!

I WASN’T EXPECTING CARNAGE EDGING HELLO??

Awks
