Just Rolled With It | RIPTIDE #107

THE COUNCIL DISCUSSES EP 107 OF RIPTIDE.

Comments

i think the resurrection definitely weakens them somehow because theres no way grizzly expected them to fight and beat the massive mass again at full power

Cucumber Joe

Completely unrelated but it would be really funny if Rebecca from the nocturnal place appeared, the one person who thought chip was pretty while he was extremely cursed 😔 I wonder what she’ll think now he’s had a glow up

Storocrat

They're canonically genderfluid

SugaryApples

I thought queen was a dude

Jake Veltkamp

Guys, look, read, idea. Call for a captains duel. Oopsies, they didn’t know all three of you are captains, bam, 3v1 to see if you’re freed, or the worst happens.

Jake Veltkamp

Unrelated to the episode itself but could Gillion use the helping hands and cast thunderous smite on chip, increasing his insane damage even more?

Ghostii

I think you’re doing great so far, Grizz! Going off on what others have said, maybe you could have the Captain send a couple of crew mates to go apprehend Gillion (since he demolished the Warden and is freeing prisoners). In the meantime, maybe the pods around the room can be popped to free extra NPCs that could help Jay/Chip fight the rest of the crew in the central room. That way Jay/Chip and the gang have a fighting chance if things go south.

Mr_Cee [I Didn’t Forget a Week, also o7 Jay Newel]

Bizly’s super powers show why he is the M&M DM.

Nicholas Winkler

unrelated but am i crazy or did the background music from the sponsor segment come from Cooking Mama 3 i used to play that game so much as a kid and i stg that's what the music was

tuesday

Ok so I don't know too much on what you have planned as the dm or why the room is an illusion, but you can play with that. Maybe they were just protecting the food source and it's so fragile that if it gets disrupted they lose this chance forever. That way you can split the enemies attention from killing the party to protect the proto Dread Queen and healing the sac if it ever gets touched. Another idea is that reviving the Dread Queen is the pirates ultimate desire right? So maybe interfering with that desire may actually end up hurting them if they are too far within their corruption, like attacking the sac involuntarily hurts the captain with psychic or necrotic damage due to the corruption and desire to revive her parasocial wife.

Raimy Perez

Ok i know im probably wrong but I am so holding onto the “Queen is the Dread Queen” theory. I think it still holds up bc I don’t think Captain Widow SAW her die so she might just think she died. Also the person’s song making Queen terrified was also something I raised an eyebrow at bc while yeah it’s a scary scene, the way Grizz specifically Mentioned how scared Queen was was weird. Idk Imma stick with my theory until im proven wrong 😤 a few more things: 1)The amount of Sapphics is growing by the day. 2) Star is fuckin beautiful. 3) I LOVED the Musician with the masks! I was making a campaign and my bosses had the theme of all wearing a different faced theater mask! So when I heard it in the episode I got so excited!

DeeDeDeeDee

I haven't heard anyone talk about Queen so I'm gonna. I think Queen mightve been a part of the dread queens crew or maybe even this one. She seemed so scared when they all were in the room together and one of the things he said a good chunk of episodes ago was that mopping the deck reminded them of their past. So they mightve been part of a pirate crew, and with the way they reacted, I'm thinking they know these guys. Also the captains bard made a lil comment about her being off key and idk if that's just cause they're both musicians, or if it was a kinda acquainted-jab, yknow??

SugaryApples

No, there's too many choices

SugaryApples

I just want to say my favorite character development has been Gillian befriending a bug at the beginning of this campaign. He thought bugs were evil, and tried to kill them. All. This just made me happy. I’m sorry for the loss of your bug friend.

Jayla Field

What I would do is to kill the captain, it seems like this is all a big spider web, as has been hinted at in previous encounters. I think the captain is most likely to be the source

AAAAAAAA

Could Gillion survive a McDonald's drive-thru please I have to know

William Heath

Idea: If they pop the Sack, maybe have whatever’s inside spills out and consumes/merges with the crew in a desperate attempt to complete itself, so they become a single, half grown super monstrosity.

Vyrion-157

i started my current campaign with like fucking 10 companion npcs and for the first combat i had them all go separately from each other, and that sucked, so then i put them in little teams and that still sucked so i just let them all die

scrimmyjim

Griz could have the enemy crew act like how the riptide crew usually do during ship battles, have the captain give 1 or 2 orders, and the crew works on them Do for the visiting team what you usually do for the home team: give the captain control of the crew, the same way the riptide captains control the crew during big combat

Natsu Sekai

Honestly, deus ex machina would be bland and the pc's according to your descriptions and usage of essentially boss monsters as fodder. Im feelin a prison escape sequence of the character having lasting consequences for their fuck up. Hurting the pcs isn't as lasting as hurting their npcs in a long lasting way. So if they lose, egg em up. Make them low health stealth mission through unknowable monstrosities as punishment. They prolly gonna have to lick their wounds and regroup honestly

Dog in a trench coat

If anybody gets downed you could have them end up in those feeding sacks. I assume the people in there would be alive, otherwise they would have no life force to steal in order to grow the Dread Queen. That way if Gillion arrives after some of the party are defeated, they aren’t permanently dead and it makes sense why they were kept alive. Although that’s sort of the contingency. I think best case scenario this combat turns into a chase sequence, that way Gill and the others can enter the encounter in a timely manner. If they can all get unchained I think it would make sense for at least one of the NPCs to suggest fleeing and regrouping. I think this encounter will be very tough but I certainly think they can make it out with out any of the player characters dying. As long as the players don’t act stupid and they think thoroughly about their predicament, I think the majority of them will make it out ok. Just have faith in the players I guess.

Agree with Duckie's comment on separate NPC fights with general updates. For Grizz, Echoing Kuailphobe in that if the group currently in the throne room gets utterly rolled in a round or two, instead of killing them outright you could put them in the sacs, unless they do something truly outrageous like popping the main sac that would prompt killing them immediately. You can probably give a good amount of corruption points too if this occures It otherwise might make some sense for certain members of the other pirate crew to sit out the start of the fight such as the bard and the captain; the Minotaur (cant remember names well at all, apologies) could vouch for that in character or maybe argue he can take the group himself and/or with chaingel and collector. This suggestion is based on the fact that in the episode you had mentioned something along the lines that these characters were starting to think pretty little of the Riptide Pirates after Gillion was "flattened" by the fountain, and mentioned pissing themselves out at sea. That said, one of their crew did mention Gil was still alive, and might be able to mention that he slew one of their own unless the anti magic pin prevented seeing that. That said, I'm not expecting the group to come out unphased- I'm honestly expecting death saves or a death outright. And who knows? Maybe the riptide pirates all wake up in mind flayer pods aboard a nautiloid, an-

Snowbird334

GRIZZLY if they lose just put them in the sacks and have them wake up and struggle to escape from the sacks and have it be this traumatic near death experience where they all break out of the sacks and theyre covered in slime and fluid and if they win then they get to blow up the sack and fight the unfinished corpse of the dread queen which is gross and scary

Nolan Carlsen

No the dread queen is in the sack and captain is the dread queens lover

Abdulaziz Mohammed

Oh. God

That one middle child

Separate NPC fights fire sure, I would give whichever side that’s most likely to win a plus, and go from there, also maybe if you want to put even more pressure, have Gillion roll to see how fast he can get there

Zythe

this is my first time listening to a rolled but anyway i agree 100% with having separate npc fights. i'd recommend just giving little updates kinda similar to the ep100 fight iirc?? idk just something to let jay and chip know if everyone else is getting their asses kicked. i absolutely gotta check out some of the other rolleds sometime i've been slacking. i also agree w the other comments on having Star and the tabaxi know some shortcuts so gillion can get there sooner (and hopefully get a heal from Star so hes not as close to death)

Duckie

Having separate npc vs npc fights would be a good idea; easier to keep track I think,,, maybe each players can choose a couple npc, divide them between bizly and condi and roll for them for the npc fights? (I don't know if this is allowed in dnd but it would be interesting if condi and bizly had the the npc sheets and played on behalf of them MAYBE?) and chip and jay can fight the strongest npcs (the captain and some others) OR the captain enters the fight later, maybe after a couple of npcs on her team are down. about gillion, I don't know what plan grizzly has with star or the tabaxi but if they were kept alive, then they were probably forced to work for these pirates, maybe they know a shortcut around the castle? if they know their way around the castle, then MAYBE gillion can reach the fight faster. idk about gillion's low health though god bless him rip (just my thoughts since grizzly was asking, don't listen to me I have never played dnd before)

tora

I'd probably approach the next ep by stalling the fight with the pirates being all intimidating and unfazed by their behaviour (in case Chip and Jay aren't attacking yet) while also speeding up Gillions arrival with Stars knowledge of the area + maybe healing him a little because hes clearly banged up. The stalling might not work but I think it'd give the same impression if they didn't kill all of them and instead imprisoned them in the dungeon or went straight to putting them in the sacks. It'd also be fucking terrifying for Gillion and Star to walk in on while not being an instant TPK but still keeping it as a dangerous and stressful situation for everyone.

kuailphobe

I think the Deck of Many Things could be a cool idea.

Vyrion-157

Not gonna lie really thought I was on the money with this sac being then unborn King's but I was right about the captain being the dread queen so ha ha
