NA/EU Cache update

As you may have noticed, there has been some recent instability with the NA and EU cache servers over the past week. This is because we've had to temporarily redirect NA traffic to the EU cache, causing them to occasionally be overloaded at peak times.

TLDR: Hopefully the NA cache will be back online next week.

Detailed:

The NA cache server traffic wasn't "unmetered" from our provider, and instead had a capped traffic rate, with the option to upgrade to unmetered at a later date, as this is what would fit into our budget at the time. Over the past 6 months we've started hitting the cap and encountering bandwidth overages ($1/TB) on these servers, and in July we had a big leap and hit a $900 bill for excess traffic, making economic sense to pay for the unmetered upgrade on each of the servers. However, our provider refused to honor the previously quoted price and instead wanted over 3x more, which was way outside of our budget. So unfortunately, we had to cancel the servers to prevent further excess overages.

We've been talking with 3 providers (including our old provider but looking at a different datacenter), to get the NA cache servers replaced ASAP. Hopefully we can get them back online sometime next week.

Thanks very much for your support and patience whilst we deal with this ❤️

We actually use Hetzner for the EU file servers, and they really are great, especially for the price. Unfortunately they don't have any locations outside of EU, and whilst they offer larger 10Gbps ports, only the 1Gbps ports come with unmetered traffic. We use Psychz's Amsterdam location for the EU cache servers, which have 10Gbps ports.

Have you had a look at Hetzner in Germany? They won Hoster of the Year, well deserved, imho. They have a machine with unlimited traffic and a 160TB(!) server for 225€. (Support is also in English, and the website too, of course. You can swittch at the top.) https://www.hetzner.com/de/dedicated-rootserver/sx134?country=DE

Thanks again for the transparency.

I couldn't agree more, unfortunately they're at a price point that is very difficult for other providers to beat, and due to our limited budget we don't have a lot of choice. Ideally we won't use them, but I've just had 1 of the 3 providers pull out, and the other doesn't seem hopeful either. Their billing and sales are absolutely awful, but their network is good for the price. Although it's a bit of a bitter pill, at the present time they look like the best option, unless we can work something out with the other provider.

I won't pretend to understand the business or your situation, but just as an outsider looking in, it kinda seems like you shouldn't give that provider your business, assuming they gave you an official quote in good faith and then went back on it when you were in a more desperate position.

BTW thanks for the info.

Normal business practices dont exist anymore.

"However, our provider refused to honor the previously quoted price and instead wanted over 3x more" Wow. Typical.
