on christian nightclubs: the history of christian asceticism is quite complicated, but there’s some points that author barbara ehrenreich made in her book “dancing in the streets” that i thought of during this conversation. first, ehrenreich goes into depth about the possibility that jesus (in a literary/folklore sense) came from dionysus. hence the love of wine! early christians may participated in ecstatic rituals in the way we imagine the cult of dionysus, although ehrenreich admits that the evidence on this is scarce. furthermore, as the catholic church became a prominent institution, officials wanted to distance the church from the occult nature of early christianity. one point ehrenreich made was that the church disavowed getting wild and crazy because ecstatic religious experiences gave the commoner a direct connection of god, instead of receiving gods word via the institution of the church. when the protestant reformation happened, there’s even more fun policing. she writes about how this coincides with firearms becoming the standard weapon for most soldiers, and how calvinist military leaders discouraged getting lit because of the new risk of retaliation with guns.

That segment made me think about the time last year someone hit me on the highway, totaled my car and fucked up my back… my bf picked me up every work night at 4am from my bartending job for like 2 months and drove me around EVERYWHERE until I got a new car. And I lived like 30 mins away from him at the time. I got a fat security deposit back from moving, and as a thank you, I paid for his plane tix and accommodations for a vacation with my family (for his first trip ever out of the country) so that he can take off the time for work and not worry about $$. A good partnership is give and take <3

I've been with my partner 6 years and we try to keep things mostly split evenly but when I made more money I picked up more of the financial stuff and now that he gets paid more he takes care of more of the bills.
