"Jesus drop a nuke on these f---ks" killed me.

You are most welcome

Jordan Gibson

immediately gets "Day by Day" stuck in my head.

HOW DID NOONE MENTION GODSPELL??

Jordan Gibson

I so need Ben to read Lamb (The Gospel of Christ according to his best friend Biff) by Christopher Moore as his only account of the Bible

Jordan Gibson

Godspell, anyone?

Mallori Longo

Now.. was the second best carpenter of Jesus jokes because Sabrina is better or because Harrison Ford?

Jacob Bowman

Great parody! Watch JCSS!! You won’t regret it.

Gabe McGuire

Donny looking like a snack

Mariana Sedillo

Thank you for prompting me to watch this. New favorite movie musical for me now.

Dylan Murray

The last Sup?

Johannes Wiberg

regarding the second trump term: don't worry! i heard this one's going to be a musical!

Anthony Carillo

I think David would really like Only You.

Hayley

Never been a series i will not be watching any of the movies off. The pentance for, 12 years in music and for me a great board game series. The butt hole cut is the only thing im remotely interested in for ALW. So many icks.

Ryan Gunn

I’m fascinated by that “Brotherhood of Man” NBC promo. An incredible snapshot of a moment #ilikethat

Ian

I’m saying it now, if the guys don’t discuss the iconic Sideways Cats video essay in the Cats ep I will riot

Isabelle Iverson

God I forgot Caroline or change was in the lineup with wicked and avenue q. That should have won. What a great show.

Liz aka Cosbrarian

Ben this episode- god damn 😂 54:04- “My dad hit me with Jesus, Santa, the Easter bunny- not real. Like one, two…”

Spencer Hall

I've not seen JCSS, but I try to watch Matt Berry's parody AD/BC: A Rock Opera every Christmas and highly recommend it if you have a half hour! https://youtu.be/JS1eTb6smNM?si=hr4JJnD_R5I7nMcZ

In my experience, other tensions fill the gap (for me, vax vs. anti vax). While religious tensions are loaded because one side may be worried about the eternal souls at stake, it is also difficult to disagree about nonreligious things where ones immediate health is at stake.

Mike Ostrov

They winkie-winkie-d the Color Purple—Spielberg CONFIRMED

JC

the main cultural tail on Avenue Q (for me at least) is that NOFX covered 'everyone's a little bit racist' on the 2009 Warped Tour lol

They’re not talking about Jeepers Creepers: Semi Star ….

films

Not a stray "is this Judas?" during the Caiaphas song 😂 Surreal and delightful to hear the friends chat over one of my faves. One of the only films in which I feel like I know more about it than them. Highly rec folks check out the Ted Neeley commentary, really moving reflection of the project recorded soon after Carl Anderson died

Maricela Gonzalez

Thank you. No one knows what I’m on when I say that.

Matt

Yup, that's it! Misheard it thank you!

If I’m not mistaken it was Crown Prints crownprintsnyc.com

Annie

Can someone send the website or instagram page for whoever printed the posters for the town hall show? Would like to add them to my roster of printers to follow, thanks!

Very excited for Cats(2019), one of the greatest film going experiences I've ever had

ian

Sadly it's not a theatrically released film. It does rule though

ian

It really isn't any more stupid than Billy Madison or Happy Gilmore. And Winkler is really damn good in it

ian

Loved the discussion of their religious upbringing, and the combined musical knowledge of Griffin and David. They have a great perspective on this material

Owen Phillips

Very excited for ALW… as a CATS film defender I’m excited to hear about how all of this fits together.

fartinscorcese

It's a up to taste, but I personally disagree since I want those falsetto screams - no one did them better than the concept album singer Ian Gillan (lead singer in Deep Purple) where he ad libbed them during recording, and most versions of Jesus have imitated him since.

Johannes Wiberg

I think this Patreon series has become less of a commentary series (which is would probably not function well as) and more of a hangout session with a film in the background - and I'm all here for it, even if it can be a bit frustrating when you want them to notice something specific. I wrote a paper on Jesus Christ Superstar when I studied musicology so I know this well, so I was hoping for some more in depth talk about the work and the performances - but in the end, that's not what this series is about. I guess we could either appreciate it for what it is, or unsubscribe. I love it so the choice is easy for me.

Johannes Wiberg

Why does Griff wear nem bands on his wrists

Annie

Between this and David’s sax solo on Lost Highway episode I’m convinced we need more episodes where David does some performance.

Tori

It’s interesting to hear the guys talk about the absence of religion in their households growing up. It must be a huge relief. I may be the only person in my entire extended family who isn’t a devout Christian. It’s a major source of tension internally and externally

Andy P

Man, Griffin just had no interest in talking about this actual movie huh

Timothy Wilson

Sims’ rendition of ALW ballads = 10/10

Laura Bee

More Carl Anderson talk! What a freaking force of nature he is in this.

Timothy Wilson

This Jesus has nothing on John Legend’s TV musical performance

Jennifer Riggs

Peter Klaven

It’s hilarious because when l hear “rubber-band man” l think if T.i. 😂

Peter Klaven

Denzel Washington's The Hurricane isn't outdated at all! It so powerful and very relevant. Movie makes me cry every time. Such a good picture.

Peter Klaven

I enjoyed the brotherhood of man joke

Leroy Beckett

You know who did a great job playing Jesus was that Ken Halkheiser. It was very tastefully done.

Spence Lee

This is an amazing episode!

Chris L Kendall

I’m not even finished and I have think this ep has a shot at making the Best of Hosley album? Incredible. Love you boys

Ben Schultz

Did Griffin signal that they're doing EARLY SPIELBERG?!

Chauncey Telese

I will not stand by their waterboy slander. Is it stupid? Unabashedly but if you like football and or played it it really works.

Chauncey Telese

I would beg to watch this movie constantly as a young kid and was SO taken in by the overture that I thought they actually left Ted Neeley in the desert when they pack up and drive off at the end.

Allison Hrabar

Re: The Man who loved cat dancing. That movie was filmed in the small town where I grew up. I had a laugh when it was described as “fun” on the episode as there was a mysterious death during filming. It was often discussed in our town so my first thought was “oh, yeah tons of fun” 😂😂

Lobo

🤞🏻rubber band man is a TI musical biopic

Dustin

Thank you Ben, I have been asking that Eddie Redmayne Redman question for years

Joel Barber

Waterboy good

Pat Vamos

My parents took me to see the wildly inappropriate Aspects of Love for my 9th birthday. Whew, what a stinker that show was!

Stephanie Radcliffe

Jewison should definitely be on the bracket

jscro

Spielberg: Origins coming up?

Trevor McCandless

What a fantastic episode. I’ll hear Ben saying “they just sing like bing bong ding dong” every time I see a musical from now on. 🎤

Chas Ellenburg

Andy Germuga

I think Nicholas Ray’s King of Kings is a mess but it’s a watchable Jesus picture. Ray kind of brings a queer energy to the production and seems a lot more interested in adding stuff not in the bible. Maybe half the running time is about decadent goings on in Herods court or rebels fighting the romans. The Jesus bit is proto hippy, you could imagine Jeffrey Hunter as a folk singing youth pastor. Rip Torn is Judas. Also for a 1961 biblical epic it’s 2:40 rather than the 3 hours plus those things usually are.

David Kirk

"Sit in silence" during the overture? Is it a silent musical?

ediblegenius

It’s not a burger report exactly but recently I was at Sardi’s (big theater crowd bar in Times Square, for non-NYC folks) and ALW himself walks in with a small crowd. He got what looked like a club soda with lime and was extremely friendly with the bartender. No one else in the bar approaches him but after he left, an older guy at the end of the bar looks at me and is like, can you fucking believe that was ALW? Fun times. Anyway this movie rules, glad the BC team is doing it!

Amy Plitt

"it is not a conflicted jesus" continues to talk over jesus singing about how conflicted he is

Kyle W Hines

It wasn't theatrically released.

Johannes Wiberg

Somehow my theatre hag kid self has never seen the movie adaptation (and The Chorus Line movie was big in my house so…) It’s been a bummer week and this was very much needed, perfect timing

The Mad Jay Woman

correction: text

Potch

“it is not a conflicted jesus” the entire subtext of the musical would like a word

Potch

Thank you for this!!!!

Chet Kazalski

I was on the 18th hole!

Mike Ostrov

No!

Mike Ostrov

Hey Jeepers! Check this shit ouuuuuuuttttt (spins)

Matt Skoufalos

I would pay good Republic credits to know Scorsese’s thoughts on this movie, I don’t at all mean that he ripped something off and Last Temptation is obviously an extremely extremely different movie but there’s various aspects of this movie, especially visually, where I just would be really interested to know what Marty thinks

Rad Rodge

Hey-Seuss Christ. Hey-Seuss Christ. Who are you? What have you sacrificed?

Benji Black

Man I am fired up for this poodoo
