I don't know where David got his Dennis The Menace UK date from - both strips were first published *on the same day* - 12 March 1951.

TimeGentleman

David is such a douche it's unbelievable.

Joshua Brown

Just love the energy here... Hearing David go off with such passion for an extended period makes my heart sing

Vegan Police

I love this episode so much

Rad Rodge

Listening to it again right now, it’s a masterpiece, obviously it isn’t specifically about, you know, a movie so it feels weird to say this is one of my all-time favorite episodes of the show but it absolutely is

Rad Rodge

Boo they took down the youtube video for some reason

Calvin

I've listened to this one four times it's an absolute banger!

Vegan Police

watching this but gotta say its not the cosby show they show its Desmonds the first UK sitcom with a British black family as they main characters

Anthony James Marshall

The complaints about torch bearers not being “famous” enough had me FURIOUS and fully siding with David

Susan Hill

This was one of the best commentaries! Loved it

Eric Mahler

This was super cool - I wouldn't have watched the ceremony without the commentary and it made it so rich. Here's hoping for more non-movie commentaries!

Regis L

I agree. Britain informed the evolution of punk (as did a great many things) but Britain in no way was responsible for its genesis.

Jeremy Jones

This was SUCH a good ep!!

Jason Greer

I love The Who. I feel safe saying they’re my favorite classic rock band, just in terms of regular listening.

Philip Ehlke

At 3:05:07, as Great Britain has just entered the stadium and confetti or something is raining down, we cut to Her Majesty The Queen looking hilariously bored.

ed wine supernova

The music references around 1:14 are fantastic. +1 million comedy points for Griff's Nevermind the Buzzcocks joke.

Michael Kolodziej

David knows more about England, where he lived for most of his childhood and young adulthood, than I know about America, where I have lived my whole life.

Michael O’Brien

Important point, absolutely true! And Death rule.

Jeremy Jones

The stuff with Harold Abrahams getting into Gilbert & Sullivan stuff at university, there is charm in a college-movie way that you wouldn’t expect from the movie

Rad Rodge

And re: Chariots of Fire, Nigel Havers fuckin rules in that, the most charming megarich toff performance I can think of. THAT’s the hidden gem in that movie, not much of the movie is funny but when the movie does get light and human, there is stuff I like haha

Rad Rodge

MC5 & Iggy/Stooges were early punk inception but don’t sleep on (also from Detroit) the group DEATH & their album “…For the Whole World to See”. The songs Rock n Roll Victim & Politicians in My Eyes in particular. So yes, as with many other genres, punk was invented by black people in america. & Detroit is definitely the birthplace of punk regardless

Max Lazzara

Logo is good by the way

Rad Rodge

Ah man I forgot about the Too Many Italians dream hahahaha holy shit

Rad Rodge

This would rule. No bits, this would rule

Rad Rodge

Listening to David rhapsodize so lovingly about British culture actually got me feeling quite homesick for the UK. O, to be blasting to The Prodigy in an NHS bed, while Kenneth Branagh shouts the bard at me, or as I used to call it, a normal Tuesday.

Seán Lynch

I could not believe the the locks/lox confusion got even worse this episode with Griff throwing in lochs. I’m pumped to hear his next clarification where it somehow gets even less correct.

Hayley

I loved this!!!

Deren Ney

Dry Cleaning slap

Rory Dawson

Gold.

Guillermo Jiménez

I like it

Har Mar Fan

I doubt there's any more coming since the assault charge.

HappyCroc

As a born and raised Brit, I was so confused by the Tubular Bells chat that I had to pause and listen to it. It's just the Exorcist theme! Where else am I supposed to know it from?

HappyCroc

The logo is terrible.

Brendan

Lock (water navigation) Not to be confused with Loch. A lock is a device used for raising and lowering boats, ships and other watercraft between stretches of water of different levels on river and canal waterways.

Bairbre

I felt the same way when David said "Mawn-treal" instead of "Mun-treal" when talking about the 1976 Olympics

Marty TC (child-sized Cardassian)

Also re: Arctic Monkeys not crossing over … tell that to the sell out arena shows on the AM tour!!!!

fartinscorcese

The lox/lochs moment is canonical at this point

fartinscorcese

J.R.R. Tolkien would have HATED this

Marty TC (child-sized Cardassian)

nothing like the empiric force that is the colonial UK to charm me to tears. This ceremony is cute, but still myth-making of the highest order...

Christian Harder

Frank Turner playing on the hobbit mound was the main part of this I remembered. What an amazing batshit episode.

plank10

“I’m just worried about my wife” SENT me!!

Mike Burdge

David is giving some serious Little Lord Fauntleroy energy on this episode. All High Tea, Test match on the tele, God save the King, quaff your Pimms cup at the Polo Club, pip-pip, cheerio, hey nonny-nonny, our 800 year old buildings have no heat.

AlsoNamedB0rt

Tubular Bells is brought up and nobody mentions the Pure Moods compilation? It’s almost like you don’t even listen to Enigma’s Return to Innocence every morning…

AlsoNamedB0rt

I don't disagree!

Matthew Parsons

BEN IS RIGHT

Wes Alvis

But I don't think punk retains potency for 50 years as a music style, fashion style, or ethos if it's not codified in England around the Pistols/Buzzcocks/X-ray/Slits, etc.

Mike Ostrov

Shout out to Mike's sister Sally Oldfield, who makes better records

Mike Ostrov

Love the Dizzee Rascal love in this ep! (He *is* still making music, Griffin. His last two albums have been super-solid returns to form. His best stuff since "Maths & English" (IMO).)

DJ Nekroman

MC5 Kick out the Jams

Rouj B

The only thing that I am really upset about is that the Olympics broadcast didn’t show the digital Freddie Mercury on the stage.

Bek Yuldashev

The Dog is howling this episode and we love to see it

Crispy Año

Looking forward to Ben's book "America Invented Punk "

Oscar Charles

Two things. 1. David's excitement about Britain is contagious. 2. I totally forgot about the fact that NBC cut away from the London Bombings tribute. How ridiculous. Edit: 3. I'm with David on Steve Redgrave. Though I only know about him through Top Gear

Universal Single Payer

That was a special Olympics for me. I spent most of that summer staying with my dad, who had all the premium cable channels, meaning I always had some Olympics to watch. I remember the legendary volleyball run of Kerri and Misty, the dominance of the US Women’s soccer team…but also catching smaller events, realizing that Korea dominates archery and Japan dominates wrestling…and also, white water kayaking is an official sport?? Great summer!

CT

Beano started in the 30s but the character of Dennis the Menace debuted in March 12th 1952, coincidentally the same day as the American equivalent

Arlo

David is usually excitable but on this one he's like the Vince McMahon flaming-eyes meme become anthropomorphized. Love it!

Trevor Pyle

America invented punk. Britain invented punk-without-being-able-to-play-an-instrument. We can argue all day about which is the more profound innovation.

Sean Hogan

“How Incredible is this TERF” I had to double check the episode didn’t skip ahead to the R*wling part

Scott Dillon

I must point out that the song used in the hectic, fast-moving scene along the Thames at the beginning of the program is by none other than the British electronic duo know as Fuck Buttons

spencer dennis

Griffin bursting out laughing at David having Tubular Bells on vinyl, like it's some kind of novelty record and not a sublime masterpiece: SMH

Matthew Parsons

Logo is modern trash

Jon Tiberious

Mewes Joke did NOT disappoint

Eileen Tierney

Ugh, I was tearing up a little watching the opening. I suppose one downside to living in a country that took over the world thanks to oceans and immigration is that we can't really tell a story as concise as this. Or, well, the level of whitewashing we would need would be sort of comical. American history and culture is a lot of things, but quaintly charming isn't one of them. Nor does it inspire a ton of nostalgia.

Uhhh...Greg

Everyone is geeking out for the agrarian stuff and seconds later I'm giving a standing ovation to COLUMNAR BASSALT!

Sean Hogan

Also, this was a wonderful episode, thank you for doing it.

Zwoozy

The comment above is right about the misplaced optimism when this happened. Watching this now, it’s quite sad how there are several parts of UK’s history Danny Boyle highlighted that have been mistreated in the years since. From the funding of the NHS to the awful treatment of the Windrush Generation by the tories. Dry Cleaning are so good!! Also, hot take, Arctic Monkeys last two albums where they don’t sound anything like what you see here are the good ones.

Edward Finn

I love Marie, but I can't tell you how many times I hoped she would stop singing.

Mason Moreno

David losing his shit over the disrespect being shown to Steve Redgrave and just repeatedly shouting "gold" five times in a row is the most British thing he's ever done.

Adam Butterworth

Happy for David!

Ryan Kight

I can't help but feel a pang every time the two friends mention Tenet and I remember that we can't revisit that episode 😭😭😭

Matt Maher

Best of bloody british

Jed

I agree with ben but I love how impassioned david is

Jed

Ben and Sims should do a music podcast

Jed

Americans definitely invented punk. Members of the Clash and Sex Pistols saw the Ramones and stole their look from Richard Hell and Alan Vega (from suicide).

Joshua Inman

I hate to be a little Corrector Colin, but it's MUTTONchops, not porkchops.

Zwoozy

i was hoping in my heart of hearts that they'd do a Box Office Game for the weekend of the ceremony.

deirdre nelle

Punk was not invented by Brits. Look to MC5 and Iggy in Detroit, as well as bands like Television, which Malcom McLaren ripped off and shipped back to the UK to then manage the Sex Pistols.

Jeremy Jones

Ben repeatedly shouting out the "pork chops" instead of mutton chops, I love it.

Emily K

punk*

Austin McDougle

btw pun is definitively NYC

Austin McDougle

David is getting his US citizenship revoked over this

Rob R

Let's finally get this locka business straightened out: Griffin, "loch" is Scotland is lake, but the kind Ben was referring to in Holland are "locks," like shiplocks on canals. So spelling it out should have helped you a bit.

Gabriel Mathews

So you're going to be doing live coverage of every forthcoming opening ceremonies from now on, right? You gotta at least do Paris '24.

Graig Kent

Say what?

Josh Harvey

I have never ever minded eating on mic, but as someone from Atlanta, the way everyone on this show pronounces “Atlanta” is driving me insane. I am begging you, stop pronouncing the T’s so hard. it’s more like “Adlana”

Austin McDougle

this is one of my favourite Patreon episodes ever, the joy is so contagious

Ningxin Zhu

I love the olympics

Austin McDougle

It most definitely is. The MC5 and Iggy and the stooges in particular. It was a decade before the sex pistols. I understand that for the brits, singing “God, save the Queen” was a big deal, but that was happening literally a decade after punk music and already been developing in the US. You don’t need to go far. Google this question, and I don’t think you’ll find a single source that says it started anywhere, but Detroit Michigan. As has been pointed out, it was US bands going to the UK, which really brought it to the UK. But as I said, just like the Beatles and Led Zeppelin, and the Rolling Stones, arguably did rock ‘n’ roll better than any Americans, you could argue that British punk perfected it. You just can’t argue that they invented it.

Deren Ney

The kinks>>> the rest of the British bands

Kevin Fennell

Very glad you guys addressed the exit from the last James Bond movie because I was wondering if there was any inside info, aside from the fan assumptions at the time which obviously ended up not being correct. I can't believe nothing has leaked. Barbara Broccoli should run the Pentagon.

Matt

Shrek and Fiona are in the kiss montage because Shrek is Scottish obviously

Dana Hamstra

Don't think David really is from UK Top of the Pops was on Thursday night .

Norman Normalperson

Has anyone else seen the conspiracy videos saying this opening ceremony cast a spell to create covid

Benjamin Adgate

This is truly one of my favourite commentaries.

ElectricGayhem

I forgot that was a running gag at the time.

Anthony Regina

Marie is right about the logo

Anthony Regina

That red thing next to the stadium is a big ass slide

Dana Hamstra

Restart video!!! I love you folks.

Anthony Regina

Only listened to the Mewes joke. 10/10

Chris Hubbard

I think David's comment is quite important on this, its pretty clear that attributing those styles of music to America as a whole is giving a lot of credit where its not due. Black Americans created jazz and the blues, those were not styles championed by america until white musicians (including brits) took the form and made edits. Its just not true to describe america as having invented the music either.

Danny K

As a brit this might be my fave ever episode. Watching this 10 years on following the malaise of Tory austerity and the slow disintegration of our public services like the NHS, almost makes this feel quaint and naiive. Rowling becoming a TERF, britain transforming itself into a poor nation with some rich folks. A real moment of a false start.

Danny K

But yeah have to say Winter Olympics > Summer Olympics

Joshua Ochoa

Always wondered if David was full mast when the Dog is off the leash. Turns out yes, he was erect…probably will happen for the Steve Jobs episode too.

Joshua Ochoa

I haven't listened yet but I do feel like this podcast exists in large part to litigate the 2 Dennis the Menaces

Martin Schneider

Great episode. I’m pretty sure “hip-hop Sims“ came out today, and was the one robbing Detroit — the undisputed birthplace of punk in the late 60’s — and giving it to the UK. To the Sex Pistols no less, who were the Green Day of their time, the band that took it to the suburbs. Ben is correct, that America invented, jazz, blues, rock, and punk. But he is totally wrong that they didn’t bring anything new to it. It could be argued, they perfected every one of those genres.

Deren Ney

This might be the first time that I actually do a watch along with your commentary.

Paul Huxley

So... thorough

Joel Orr

Not me going to an Arctic Monkeys concert in September 😂

Jessica B

Guessing you didn’t stick around for the parade of athletes. Cowards!

Matt Rombach

Not gonna lie, when you said you were doing a commentary for this I thought it was like... 15-30 minutes, maybe. Not FOUR HOURS???

Begemott

it's absolutely deranged that you guys are doing this and i couldn't be happier about it

Jordan B. Anderson
