MARCH MADNESS 2023 - Day 24

Hahahahaha MORTAL KOMBAT WINS! FINISH HIM! And by “him,” we mean Larry the Cable Guy as that hillbilly tow truck.

In our last Sweet Sixteen franchise matchup, it’s the Four Lads from Liverpool against Billy Loomis et al.

It’s THE BEATLES vs. SCREAM.

With THE BEATLES, we’d cover their 4 musicals:

Get Back (2021) is, unfortunately, too long for us to do as a commentary. We could possibly do a non-commentary episode on that if they win the whole thing.

With SCREAM, we’d cover the 6 franchise installments:

So - “Help!”? or “HELP I AM BEING STABBED BY GHOSTFACE!!”?

Comments

I’ll give you all that with the first two Screams!

Kevin Love Hewitt

👑 Timothy making a claim then backing it up with insight. The kind of insight you won’t see on Screams 4-6.

Kevin Love Hewitt

Richard Lester is a major director who practically created (or at least popularized) the language of music videos. It borrowed from the French New Wave and applied those techniques to a movie starring what was then thought of as a passing teenage fad, thus putting them in front of very mainstream audiences. Not sure why this is controversial? I would never say Scream isn't important (it's great!), just that the series falls off a cliff after the second one and the series would be boring.

Timothy May

Lol no

Anthony Regina

"A Hard Day's Night is one of the most significant movies ever made from a film language point of view" god I hope this is a bit

Percy Leopold Cromwell

They'll probably post one with the start of the new round today

Parker Suczynski

There are people commenting here who weren’t paying attention to horror in the mid 1990s. If you just like Beatles movies more, god bless and definitely hear that opinion. However, in 1997, Horror was shit. There were some fun movies here and there but Scream had a Halloween-ish (not comparing the two, not my argument) like impact on the horror genre. It reinvigorated horror. I f*ckin love the Beatles but, as a film franchise, Scream has not made a bad movie and is far more impactful to movies going forward, imo.

Wayne Telford

This is the only argument I would take in this argument. Patrick Bromley and Heather Wixson are finishing up a complete dive into Craven. On F This Movie stream. Craven for Craven. Even the TV movies. Pretty fun listen if you love Wes

Wayne Telford

Riding Scream until it’s end!

Wayne Telford

Yeah we really need to get out of the late 90s/early 2000s. Becoming a problem with March Madness.

Chris Fyvie

Sure, it's interesting through Scream 3, I suppose (though the reclamation of tha t movie baffles me). The last three are real bottom of the barrel dreck, though, and their "insights" into modern horror trends are very surface level. The culture of the late 90s/early 00s has been quite thoroughly discussed on this show. I suppose not from a horror angle, but the boys don't care that much about horror, so I don't anticipate very deep conversations, especially since one of them has never seen the movies before.

Timothy May

there's absolutely loads of contexts to the scream series, they're so meta that not discussing Craven's experiences in making the films (which form the basis of Scream 3) would be silly. Ripe for chat about all sorts given how central to culture the Screams are

Danny K

There hasn't been a good Scream movie since 1997. This will be a deeply boring series. Very little creative team overturn, same basic formula every time. Griffin hasn't seen them, so there'll be a lot or reacting as opposed to insight, a la the Star Trek series. A Hard Day's Night is one of the most significant movies ever made from a film language point of view, and is also a ton of goofy fun. And Yellow Submarine is built for this format.

Timothy May

Insane that this was a matchup

Vegan Police

The WilliamSons&Daughters unite!

Percy Leopold Cromwell

It's kind of like Seinfeld. Prett basic now but at the time like nothing other. Scream kicked off two huge trends: pop cultural aware meta commentary and the Kevin Williamson era. Scream was the first horror movie to acknowledge the existence of horror movies which at the time was extremely refreshing and especially appealing to gen x cynicism. As for the writer,Kevin Williamson, he went on to make I know what you did last summer and then more importantly Dawon's Creek. This was the mold that all CW shows for decades would follow. His influence is all over late 90s early 2000s pop culture and Scream kicked it all off. Not to mention the fact that horror was on its way out and Scream brought the genre back into not only the mainstream but got it a bit of respect. Halloween was on the path of direct to VHS but its feature in Scream renewed its interest and Kevin Williamson even went on to write the treatment for H20. Sorry for the long ramble, but the short version is it's up there with Halloween and Psycho as huge milestones of innovation for the slasher genre.

Percy Leopold Cromwell

I’m just adding to the pile at this point, love their music f$$$ the movies

EvanEightNine !

I do think it helps if you were around when the original came out. I generally am not a fan of slashers and I have seen all 6 of these for some reason. They're real dumb fun.

Brynndiana Jones

SCREAMSWEEP

Kat White

I've always said Ben look very clean!

The Duke of Nebraska

Is Scream a "you had to be there" thing? Cause I was born the same year as scream 3 and I really just don't understand the appeal of this franchise (no shade, of course)

The Duke of Nebraska

YELLOW. SUB. MARINE.

bug

Can anything beat Police Story?

Bill

The Beatles would have more juice with me if you also included an entire episode talking about the Beatles sequence in Walk Hard

JB

Scream 3 makes scream 4 look like scream 6

JB

Hmmmm

Rad Rodge

and they're all GREAT! amirite?

Brynndiana Jones

You said it, Skimbleshanks

Rad Rodge

100%, Richard Lester as inventor of the music video is just irresistible

Rad Rodge

This would be so many fricken Scream movies

Rad Rodge

Sheesh this is not very fab

Rad Rodge

What is interesting about SCREAM that the movies don’t say about themselves, mostly as direct dialogue?

John Halski

Help! the Beatles

Tom

I like SCREAM, but I want a Wes miniseries on the main feed and I don’t want to potentially jeopardize that. So, Beatles!

Alan Howell

Except for some fools!!

Anthony Regina

Aw, man.

Tobey

Ben doing psychedelics during a Yellow Submarine episode is an easy layup

Charles

Seems like an easy choice, no offense to the Beatles.

Jordan Coleman

The question is… can SCREAM beat MORTAL KOMBAT. The answer is definitely yes. wHaT’S yOUr fAvORitE scArY mOviE!?

Tyler Duggan

Rip Beatles: Get Back

LT

Scream needs to win the thing !!

Rudy A Martinez

Give me an Across the Universe ep!

Emily Parker

Scream is awesome but would completely erase any chance of Wes getting covered on main feed. With all the recent Cillian love, not doing Red Eye would be a crime. Beatles it is!

Clay Ammentorp

All my favorite remaining picks are on one side of the bracket, not too excited by Jelly, Police Story, TMNT or Oceans

CT13

Am I gonna have to cancel my Patreon?

Chuck Nipper

I am very disappointed in all of you.

HappyCroc

It's easily the favourite

HappyCroc

Twist and SCREAM

Javier Alcácer

The Beatles are great and their movies are very fun, but Scream, a nearly perfect horror series, came out at the perfect time for me in high school and it has been a deep love of mine ever since. I just love how it’s always found an interesting way to satirize the zeitgeist of horror at whatever particular moment it’s released in.

Anthony Regina

Thinking about how many different actors they could cover with the Scream series, not to mention Wes Craven, since we will never get a Craven series on main. Also, Griff hasn't seen the sequels and there's mad surprises for him! Seems like a no brainer, it would be a banger series.

Spam Boi

I think Scream could run the table, and I'm so excited about it

Michael Hollenbeck

I mean Yesterday will be covered on the main feed.

Collin Odell

Scream is def making it to the finals.

Hayley

Easy vote. With two Scream movies in about a year with many of my preferred movie podcasts covering them, I am thoroughly sick of listening to people talk about Scream movies.

Alex Stroup

would be very fun to have the boys watch Beatles movies, love when Ben gets into his music brain

Patrick Orr

I don't want to rock the boat, but the Beatles music is good. Also though, thought I wasn't rocking when I say Beatles movies bad.

colin p clune

The Beetos

Drew Scheid

I need to hear David's thoughts on Scream 3 since he goes so hard for it.

Dan H.

Is there an updated patreon bracket floating around somewhere?

Mitchell Daun

Should have included Yesterday (2019) and John and Yoko: A Love Story (1985), with Peter Capaldi as George Harrison

Bill Sweet

Slice & Dice those Liverpool lads.

RJ Burchatz

What! Who care about scream! I WANNA POD YOUR CAST!

Jon Tiberious

beep beep mm beep beep, yeah

Judson Greene

Goo goo g'joob

JT Sitko

BEATLEMANIA

Charles

Especially #4.

Mike Uehlein

CMON LADS!!

Sofia Car

God, what’s the over under on Griff’s Wes Craven audition story if we get Scream? 47?

Kevin Fennell

Shame. Would be amazing to hear them talk about Yellow Submarine. Besides, six slasher movies in a row would get old fast

Nick Domino

Scream is pretty boring but the people have spoken.....

Martin Schneider

I mean, we're all just agreeing that Scream should win this, right?

jscro

Personally looking forward to Griffin's cold reacts to the Scream cold opens.

Daniel A. Barron

Help! We need somebody, Help! And I mean anybody, Help! Y'know they need some votes, 🎵Beeeeaaaaaatles🎵

Douglas Wykstra

😱😱😱😱😱

ChewyWalrus

Beatles are the best band ever, and have some of the kookiest films from a band ever

Jason Howard

Man, I hope they do Beatles anyway sometime.

Gerry Canavan

Buncha blue meanies voting on this

Skimbleshanks The Railway Cat

I have hard time not seeing it being Ocean's vs Scream in the finals of this. Both would be perfect for a Blank Check Patreon commentary series

Jonah Kaufman

I really hope Scream wins the whole thing. Would be a fantastic series I think

Jack LaMotte

I know Scream is going to probably win the whole thing, but I wanna make the case for the lads because a) it's the most interesting part of Richard Lester's career (with the exception of the first Superman), and it's probably the closest we'll ever get to a miniseries on him; and b) they're super important movies in both film and music industry history - they practically invented the music video! Loads of wacky and experimental stuff across only four movies, whereas Scream is going to be pretty samey to watch all back-to-back. (Also PS Get Back should be a Peter Jackson episode if/when that ever happens.)

elkweed

Y'all, those four Beatles movies are BIZARRE and totally distinct from each other. You're telling me you DON'T want to hear Ben grapple with the rise of hippie culture on mic over that series??

Joseph

I just saw Scream VI yesterday and I think I've never seen a more convoluted reveal in my life

Will Redmond

Scream is so perfect for BC. Lots of context and Hollywood talk in the movies themselves. And you know Griffin would be a big Scream 3 defender

Benjamin Haworth

Scream, baby. Give me that pop horror slop, pour it into my gullet. And the two Beatles movies I've seen are borderline unwatchable if you're not a deep cut Beatles fan, imo.

Will Jacobson

Hey Jude, do you like scary movies?

Matt Vaughan

I HAVE to hear griffin's blind reacts to who the killers are

Jack Barr

Truly every matchup is unpredictable and hilarious

Jack Barr

I’m actually pretty into the idea of doing sceam, especially if they’re new to griffin

Conor Dabler

The Beatles are the most pver discussed pop culture group ever. No thanks!

Rory Dunn

Before there were Two Friends… there were Four Lovable Lads from Liverpool

TV's Kevin Lanigan

Please Beatles it's so weird and fun!!!

corndair

Bobby Z's I Wanna Hold Your Hand was all the Beatles I need on Blank Check

Sarah Farrell

I love A Hard Day's Night, but I've never seen the others. Would love to hear the friends talk about The Beatles crossing over into the movies!

Harry Blackwood

Ghostface killed John Lennon.

Casper Koopman

Too much scream recently. It's time to be Dicks.

zack albun

I'm pretty Screamed out. I hate the recent films and everyone has talked them to death. Let's watch Magical Mystery Tour with Ben.

Adam

I'm only voting for Scream because the Beatles have no chance

Christian Santos

Beatles never had a chance

Jake Nolan

Correct I wanna see girls scream at Ghostface not some English dweebs

simon d higgins

Hearing fan girls scream < Hearing horror screams
