MARCH MADNESS 2022 - DAY 16

The Blankies have unequivocally placed their votes in favor of FLIRTING - Rock Hudson and Doris Day move on!

Up today, it's the battle of the Criterion Box Sets...

Godfrey Reggio's QATSI TRILOGY vs Satyajit Ray's APU TRILOGY.

The QATSI TRILOGY are three non-narrative experimental films about the relationship between man and technology. "Sounds pretentious," you might think. WRONG. It's just hours of REALLY DOPE HI-DEFINITION FOOTAGE OF COOL SHIT scored to the most insane Philip Glass music. These movies are the thinking man's stoner content. We may or may not blaze up for these. I mean, Ben definitely will.

The films in the Qatsi Trilogy are:

KOYAANISQATSI (1982)

POWAQQATSI (1988)

NAQOYQATSI (2002)

The APU TRILOGY is the landmark work of Indian director Satyajit Ray and is considered one of the greatest coming-of-age stories of all time. The films trace the life of a young boy named Apu, following his journey through adolescence and early adulthood. You can see its influence on Francois Truffaut's ANTOINE DOINEL films and Barry Jenkins' MOONLIGHT.

The Apu Films are:

PATHER PANCHALI (1955)

APARAJITO (1956)

THE WORLD OF APU (1959)

So - which box set are we buying?

Comments

I can get a Godfrey on air interview if this actually happens

A.J.

If you access Patreon on your phone to vote, it doesn't tell until after you vote, or at least it doesn't on mine.

Tobey

I am soooooo disappointed that Cimino is getting pasted like this haha, yeah, the fellas will hopefully just commit one day cause one has to think the same fate would befall him in any future bracket

Rad Rodge

One Qatsi movie = awesome. Three Qatsi = very, very bad. The only thing to come of it will be to see who this breaks the most. Voting Apu.

Kevin Sprague

Can I make my whole vote contingent on at least one person being high?

Jeremy Frank

one time I spelled Koyyanisqaatsi correct without looking it up and I felt like a genius for two weeks straight

Abigail Treis

Voted for the prior for the Qatsi music ALONE. We watched Koyaanisqatsi in my high school environmental science class??

Mimi RuthStiver

Just got the Qatsi trilogy on criterion Blu-ray during that last 24 hour fire sale so please blankies make this happen so I can break this bad boy open and watch along with the boys

Dwight Foster

Qatsi: for people tired of all the things that movies good. 😟

Jemaleddin Cole

Please let's have Qatsi go all the way. Think of the vibes!

Danny Perez

Really don’t care for any of these being covered and I love both series

William Evans

Is there some setting I need to change for my Patreon so I don't see how the vote tallies are going before I even vote? Makes my choice feel insignificant before I get the chance to participate.

Tomas Marinara

The more I think about it the more I think blazed Qatsi trilogy is my overall pick to win.

Alex

Vote for VIBES

Melmar

Even the idea of watching the Qatsi films threatens to give me an existential crisis.

Jim Portant

There’s no chance but Qatsi is my pick to win this whole thing, would be wild and a fun change of pace

Benji Hyde

Qatsi. I've only seen the first one, but I bet it would be facinating. Also, Ben on Qatsi, that would be entertaining.

Sean McP

Qatsi would make a great winner for this whole thing. There's nothing else like it.

Holden Martinson

Qatsi would be so good I'm thinking of going all in on Qatsi

Arthur Bouhanna

Qatsi feels like cimino in the sense that they're not well known enough to do well on a bracket but I think people would still love the resulting series. Hope they can be scheduled in the other slots

πŸ„πŸ„πŸ„πŸ„πŸ„πŸ„πŸ„πŸ„πŸ„πŸ„πŸ„πŸ„

daddyov2

Satyajit Ray is a master, but I NEED to hear the guys talk about Qatsi, I NEED IT

Jonathan

The Qatsi movies at least have pretty colors.

Fred Skull

Apu! The best review is from a friend of the pod β€œoh the humanity”. The depth of the movies make me think of that review weekly.

Patrick Randolph

Prepared monologues?

Robert Young

Q A T S I

Rad Rodge

What if there was… ummm, what… aw never mind.

Tobey

Voting in these polls has become the highlight of every morning and I'm going to be sad when it ends

Gem

The Apu trilogy is a long emotionally hammering experience of watching life drain all optimism from its titular protagonist but it all leads to one of the most emotionally cathartic endings in cinema. Is this an endorsement?

JonK

Do Quatsi and I will get high while listening as well. And that sounds so wonderful.

Anthony Regina

What is Qatsi sweeps the whole freaking bracket? πŸ˜…πŸ˜…πŸ˜…

J. Bailey Burcham

Give me a reason to finally buy the Apu set! I already own Qatsi!

Evan

But to be clear: WILD that they’re on this bracket.

Whit Barringer

The Qatsi trilogy is quite the chaotic option here, but maybe that would be cool? Idek.

Whit Barringer

(Also IMO Baraka is the best of this genre, going by my multiple stupified college sessions)

elkweed

I don't even know how you're going to do the Qatsi trilogy but I'm here for it.

Billnetherlands

Can't Quit Quatsi

The Real Kal-El

I saw Satyajit Ray's last film Agantuk in 2020 and was thoroughly charmed but I'm gonna have to go with Reggio if only just cause if Ben hasn't heard the Philip Glass soundtrack he absolutely should.

Austin Ato

Bonus ep for Baraka?

Constantinos Symeonides

I want Qatsi but only if Ben promises to do it on shrooms (G+D can be trip sitters)

elkweed

Scary quire: KOYAAANISQATSII!

Johan Malmgren

Vote for your friend and mine, Apu!!

TV's Kevin Lanigan

I want more people to watch The Apu Trilogy, but I want more Blank Check hosts on drugs. It’s tough.

Manton

I would LOVE to have the gang discuss the Qatsi movies 😍

Devin DiMattia

#LetTheBoysBlaze

Judson Greene

Qatsi all the way!

PoorFrisco

C’mon guys, give me an excuse to crack open my apu box

Andrew J. Eisenman

The Qatsi commentaries seem like they would be Maximum Lunch Order episodes.

Daniel A. Barron

No real chance of either of these going far, but the fact they put these on the bracket will always be hilarious to me
