Top of the Lake: China Girl with Alan Sepinwall
Added 2022-03-11 05:00:32 +0000 UTCTV critic and literal saint, Alan Sepinwall, joins BC: SF as we close out our Campion mini series for a discussion on all 6 unpleasant hours of Top of the Lake season 2. Unfortunately, the character Alexander "Puss" Braun is mentioned several times! Other than covering the many fundamental issues and overall disdain there is also a Blue Bloods story and a real time Deadline update. But mostly everyone REALLY does not like the previously mentioned character.
Comments
I just want to go on the record as a lifelong Australian saying Moss's accent work is not good, it's more off-putting to me than the "antihero" Puss. Winslet's accent is very good in Holy Smoke. If you want to see an American doing a convincing Oz accent, watch Nitram, about a real life person who is much worse than Puss

2022-03-18 10:53:52 +0000 UTCThis bummed me out a lot. They don’t even bring up David Wenham drinking from that juice box, or the Harlem Shake drop. Unsub

2022-03-12 20:29:50 +0000 UTCY’all should have had David Ehrlich on this episode to defend this season. Woulda been fun.

2022-03-12 10:14:36 +0000 UTCC'mon, BC, there’s at least some relevant stuff in this: empowerment language being used to exploit people, themes of what taking care of people means in Robin’s vs. Puss’s world, sex work vs. birth work. It’s definitely malpractice that Sepinwall didn't rewatch it except for the scene he knew he hated. (Though I don’t like that scene either; I think this would have been better off ignoring the S1 characters entirely.) A step down from S1, but a serviceable season, and there’s no reason it had to be a series-killer. The last episode won back a lot for me. And dammit, I like Madeline, and unlike Robin’s boss I’m not afraid to say it.

2022-03-11 18:48:14 +0000 UTCAgreed. It’s very cool to get exposure to a non-man director who is not always in the forefront of most movie podcasts and movie guy discussions.

2022-03-11 17:04:46 +0000 UTCI also hated this season (so much so that I stopped watching after episode 5) but I wish you guys had gotten Ehrlich on for this one, curious to see if he stands by his love of it at the time.

2022-03-11 14:07:26 +0000 UTCI'll chime in to balance out some other sentiments. This season of Top of the Lake wasn't for me, but I have loved getting more exposed to Jane Campion. This has been a lot like Demme for me, discovering lots of movies I hadn't seen, and a filmmaker I hadn't noticed.

2022-03-11 13:45:16 +0000 UTCI find this to be the darkest cringiest cringe-comedy of all time. Puss is the worst to be sure, but also undeniably unforgettable. "BUT NOT THROUGH YOUR VAGINAS!" has become one of those quotes that me and my wife will just remind each other of every now and then. Such an absolutely unhinged performance.

2022-03-11 09:36:32 +0000 UTCThe comments aren’t giving me hope. But I’ll listen anyway. CHINA GIRL is truly Campion’s best and most 3-Dimensional work from my view. It kind of interrogates everything she’s been concerned with up until that point and adds this layer of casual surrealism matched by its really clean aesthetic. The odd comedy, the sadness at the center of it. The way it deals with men and women so obtusely. The scene where Moss meets her daughter is maybe the best scene in any Campion work. It’s so tonally tricky and just executed perfectly. The moment where she and her abuser get into a weird fight that sets a building in fire in the middle of the day that ends with her screaming like a maniac is both BAFFLING, HILARIOUS, DISTURBING, and just downright WONDERFUL. Really indicative of the high-wire act this season plays modulating all those tones. I was surprised to learn ppl didn’t like S2. I know Erhlich loves this season even more than the first. It may have been nice to have him on for this one.

2022-03-11 09:00:33 +0000 UTCI honestly don't understand why they're baffled by this season when it's in the same lane as Holy Smoke and Sweetie.
