Gyro left the ngl before Meruem woke up, it was stated int he manga but left out of the anime. He isnt anyone you met in the cast. I dont mean that to be a spoiler, but the anime will not answer your question and it was answered way earlier in the manga version of the story. Its an adaptation issue, so worth pointing out so you dont waste time on it unless you want to read the manga
