From my current perspective this isnt one of my favorite eps, but its one of the more underrated eps, within a certain context ofcourse.... maybe i just smoke too much weed but when able to fully allow myself to relate to Youpi and Pouf, this was a beautiful depiction of things ive felt at certain points. From a buddhist perspective its especially interesting the contrast between their abject horror and ecstasy within one episode, going through loss or fear of loss and its opposite, yin and yang if you will. This humanized the ants for me even more to see them experiencing the heights of ecstatic pleasure along with all else we see them undergo. I know its cheesy, and embarrassing to watch just as any of us would be embarrassed to see an image of ourselves amidst orgasm... its taboo afterall, but again for me this was a crucial part of the journey in their lives just as it is in all of ours, so it was very relatable for me. This was Youpi and Pouf' reaching their peak subjectively (for themselves) and if you allow yourself to feel that with them, its quite beautiful. For them this is the ultimate expression of their beings and what they are here to do, what they see as fulfilling their kharma. Ofcourse for Pouf, its a bit more complicated... his ideal of the king supersedes Meruem as a real individual, so he isnt content to rely on Meruem to decide for himself what is right or wrong, but thats another story. This is what makes many see Pouf as the primary antagonist of the arc ironically, because in a "shounen" regard he comes off as least threatening or 'powerful' of the primary antagonists but the most disliked or appreciated depending on your persuasion. More examples of why this isnt typical for what Shounen Jump publishes. This isnt necessarily rare in anime or manga, but rare in Shounen Jump for sure. I think Meruems story tries to thematically replicate the buddha's path, the original story, though he was a prince not a king, the parallels are all too obvious. All the power and "pleasure" at your fingertips wont solve the condition of subjective existence, but infact just expose it all the more. The easier your life becomes the more problems your mind will come up with, the more goals you meet the more your desire and level of satisfaction will grow, and if you were to reach the peek of what you think would "complete you" the emptiness of that would become even more haunting if you maintain the ideal that achieving that peek would solve your problems and relieve you from suffering, as you would realize it doesnt whatsoever. That said, there is nothing wrong about the pursuit, provided you dont take it too seriously, it is the point of life to indulge in this pursuit regardless of its futility or not. The game exists for the sake of itself and nothing more, or something like that.
