It makes more sense to me that he was corrupted even though I know many sources that agree with you. After all, he didn't care about annihilating humanity until after the Grail reincarnated him. It just makes sense if that was due to it corrupting him, even if it isn't.

2019-04-01 22:40:22 +0000 UTCFun fact: When he was doused in the grail's curses, the grail actually tried to corrupt Gilgamesh but his EGO WAS SO BIG THAT IT COULDN'T. I shit you not, that is the canon reason for why Gilgamesh was able to bathe in the grail curses and be unaffected.

Their fight was a battle of ideologies moreso than it was a battle to kill the other. The point was to crush the others ideology. That’s why Archer hesitated- because he allowed Shirou’s naïveté to influence him leading him to doubt himself . Also, Lancers Gae Bolg actually causes necrosis in the wounds it inflicts, so even if Gigglemesh hadn't offed him, Shinji would still have died a long, slow, painful death :/
