Birdhouse Archive #005

Hello everyone! This month's Archive post is hot off the presses. I finished writing this one just a couple of days ago after starting it two years ago with my brother Ian. Sometimes that's the way it goes. You get an idea and it just needs to steep for a little while before it's ready to be fully formed. Quick note: This recording is not as polished as my usual posts. I am currently on the road playing some shows up in the northeast and made this quick recording here in my hotel room. I've put the lyrics below if you're someone who likes to dive into the song. Hope you're all doing well and I look forward to sharing some new original music with you very soon!

"Steeple" written by Noah Guthrie and Ian Guthrie

Verse

How long have I been unconscious

Ever since I was a boy

Sermons confuse my conscience

And made me a skeptic of joy

Chorus

I'll lead them all to the river

Hallelujah ringing out

But there’s a big black crow on the steeple

And a bad bad taste in my mouth

Verse

You put your faith in something

Then it’s shook like a tambourine

That’s just the way it goes

For the dreamers, it would seem

Chorus

They lead you right to the river

Claim you’re worthy with every shout

But there’s a big black crow on the steeple

And bad bad taste in your mouth

Instrumental turn

Verse

I’m feeling lost in the madness

Waiting for freedom to come around

A kind of crushing sadness

Brother they love to keep you down

I think I’ll drown in the river

Holy God just pull me out

But there’s a big black crow on the steeple

And a bad bad taste in my mouth

Bridge

I wanna drink from the life water

Bring it softly to my lips

But there’s poison in the well

I have fought this fight with honor

But the high road often leads to the same despair that

 I know all too well

Verse

too long have I been unconscious

Ever since I was a boy

I’ll finally use my conscience

Make a weapon of my joy

Chorus

I’m coming up the river

Hallelujah ringing out

As I climb my way up the steeple

And with all my might I tear it down

Tear it down, tear it down.

Love it! It’s a little different from your usual sound but it’s great! Thanks for the lyrics. I always like to follow along to learn the song! See you tomorrow!
