I've struggled a lot with this illustration, mostly but not only because I didn't know how to exactly pose them, so I thought I'd keep track of the steps I went through to come up with the final!
This is more or less the process I usually follow: start with a reference (unless I'm super inspired and I have the exact pose in mind), tweak it until it speaks clearly about the characters - usually I come up with the right pose at the 1st/2nd sketch layer, as you can see this one took me many more!
To artists, three little things which greatly help me:
- Focus on the overall pose before detailing (doing hair, faces, clothes...)
- Don't spend too long fixing a sketch, redraw it on a new layer instead!
- FLIP THE CANVAS
The attached PSD contains all the layers shown in this post and more!
(Gory version is on separate layers and disabled by default. Its layers are in a group named accordingly so you can delete them if you're not interested)
Videos are recordings of parts of the process (sped up 16x), while in the PDF I've simply put together the steps' images in case you find it easier to browse that way!
