Turpentine gets mentioned and would have been almost certainly distilled sap (oil fraction) from the spruce pine tree. If in a store today this would be the most expensive paint thinner because it’s not made from petroleum. The label will say "pure gum spirits of turpentine." The Merck Manual was a reference book that listed all medicinal substances known at the time of its publication. The 1899 edition listed 88 different conditions that turpentine was listed as a treatment for.
