17 years old, they are a nonbinary teen, a bright, creative, and introverted loner. Pretending to be the perfect "son" to their bigoted, ultra-religious Southern parents in extremely rural North Carolina has become more than they can bear. After they kick Ben out of the house, they take solace in the home of their estranged sister, Ella, and her husband Thomas, in nearby Raleigh. Ben keeps careful distance from the students at their new school but finds a new friend in Nathan, their proudly bisexual classmate, who introduces them to his offbeat circle of friends -- the nonjudgmental chosen family that Ben has always yearned for.
