Storyline: A suburban teen girl (ASHLEY) and her little brother (ANDREW) must stop a terrifying internet meme brought to life by the hysteria of their parents. A rumor starts spreading around their neighborhood about a creepy viral phenomenon circulating online called “Grimcutty” that apparently makes kids harm themselves and eventually other people. Ashley and Andrew insist they’ve never heard of it, but their overprotective parents – JENNIFER and MICHAEL– confiscate all of their online devices to be safe. As the school becomes deserted due to a rash of kids “cutting themselves,” Ashley joins up with an estranged classmate named CASSIDY and together they ditch class and head into town to get their hands on a internet-enabled device. They track down the home of a mommy blogger – MELINDA – who has been exasperating parental paranoia with her posts, and soon they confirm Ashley’s theory – that parents are the ones conjuring Grimcutty with their hysteria. As the Grimcutty panic spreads through the entire town, Jennifer and Michael are in a frenzy and impossible to reason with. If Ashley can’t get them to calm down, to trust her, to listen to her, the Grimcutty will only keep getting stronger.
