A nice young man with an ineffectual personality and horrible grades, Jonathan looks as if he will spend the rest of his life piloting rowboats for kiddie parties. Shirked and shunned by his high-achieving family as a black-sheep loser, Jonathan instead is selected by a worldwide crime organization to be a patsy, a clueless front for a cabal of drug smugglers, led by the odious MR. TYRANT. Now praised by his status-obsessed parents, Jonathan begins his new life aboard a big cruise ship. Will he ever learn the sinister secret that skulks beneath his glittering new career?

In his late 20s, Jonathan is from the legendary Fall family, a clan of seagoing heroes and heroines. He's gullible, friendly, morally impeccable, with no natural authority, innocent, nervous, a prototypical beta male who knuckles under to his family. The last man on earth you'd want in command of a slippery quarterdeck during a howling storm or a bloody battle, Jonathan graduates from his Cruise Ship Academy and learns that his family's dismissive opinion of him is matched by the shipping industry - he's fit only to command a rowboat.
