In the campaign, Fenthras (Vex's vestige) had an ability where, if it killed a creature, it would cause a tree to sprout from the creature's body; Vex got the killing hit on Vorugal, so a great tree sprouted from him. Since Fenthras has not explicitly shown this ability in TLoVM, I'm guessing the writers decided to flavor the moment by having that team-up between Vex and Keyleth, so they could still get the iconic image without Fenthras suddenly manifesting a new ability out of nowhere. EDIT: Plus, it allowed them to give Kima her cool moment of killing Vorugal instead.
