Businessman Oskar Schindler (Liam Neeson) arrives in Krakow in 1939, ready to make his fortune from World War II, which has just started. After joining the Nazi party primarily for political expediency, he staffs his factory with Jewish workers for similarly pragmatic reasons. When the SS begins exterminating Jews in the Krakow ghetto, Schindler arranges to have his workers protected to keep his factory in operation, but soon realizes that in so doing, he is also saving innocent lives.

I won't talk about the film but I will mention the background behind these murders, which is now known as the Holocaust, the mass killing of the Jews during WW2. WW2 takes in place in 1939 but 20 years before that, WW1 took place between 1914 to 1918, in which Germany was a part of and loses. Hitler and the Nazis blamed the Jews for losing the war, saying they were robbed of their victory by an international Jewish plot to destroy Germany. After Hitler took power in 1933, six years before WW2, Hitler began to create laws that took away the Jews their rights, which in results in losing property, being made to wear a yellow on their shoulder to show they were Jewish (which is the Star of David), and are generally treated terribly. You could not marry Jews, you could not have a romantic relationship with a Jew, and in general, any positive interaction with a Jew could land you in deep trouble (like when Schindler kissed the Jewish girl). They wanted to get rid of the Jews but did not decide to do mass murders until during the war. Many ideas and solutions were suggested to solve this Jewish problem, with even an idea to take them to the African island of Madagascar, but ultimately the Jews were taken to concentration camps. These camps were designed to hold them in place, to use them as slave labour, and ultiately to send them to the death camps, camps designed to purposely kill Jews in what is now called the the 'Final Solution', the final method to remove the Jewish problem. 6 million Jews is the number that people give but some believe it might be more or even less than that number. However, the Holocaust took place all of Europe, in Germany, France, Norway, Poland, Hungary, and generally anywhere that the Nazis took over, and often, they were helped because the hatred of the Jews were felt by many in places that the Nazis took over. Aside from Jews, others were murdered too. Jehovah Witnesses, Roma/Gypsies, Homosexuals, Slavs (ethnic group from Eastern Europe), communists, disabled people or anyone that the Nazis considered to be subhuman enough to warrant their murder. Black people were murdered too. The Nazis were a racially driven group, and wanted to remove by any means those they consider too impure to live, in the same way people get rid of rats or vermin

My dad had me watch this when I turned 12, though he made me cover my eyes for the worst of it. We watched it together again when I was 16. Both times we had long conversations to help process how this could have happened and the trauma that still exists today because of the holocaust. This movie never gets easier to watch, and I cried with you.
