The crew messing with Mal so hard at first made me laugh and laugh. And Wash's retreat over Zoe was so sweet. I absolutely agree, they've their own style that as Wash said "not every gets (Me and Zoe) at first glance..." nor does he seem to have any fear in his statements... just respect that he's in that loveiing sort of awe of her. If I had to narrow it down to something so far, I'd say his respect is expressed in a kind of awe of her personal strength and her's is in his reliableness/capability. The slight smug tone in her statement that "my man would never fall for that...". The show only gives so much about them so far, but I think in Zoe just personality-wise and then her time in the war makes her someone who values someone she can feels sure of very highly and it's a big part of her "love language" to show it, rather than the more stereotypical sweetness and softness the (fake) Saffron and others might first expect.
