Patroncast S04E04 - Are immutable distros inevitable?

Hey everyone!

I hope you had a great week-end! Personally, I hosted all 4 of my girlfriend's nieces and nephews on Saturday and Sunday, aged 7 to 12, and while it was really fun, it was also exhausting :D

So, in this new episode of the patroncast, we'll talk about:

- 00:34 The channel, how it's doing, potential new sponsors, and trying to let things go to focus on more user funding for the channel

- 12:05 Immutable distros, and whether they could become the default option most people will run in the future

I hope you'll enjoy the episode, and I hope you'll have a great week!

Oh yeah, that's a great advantage of containers / containerized applications, they make "older" distros much more viable for a lot of people. They're still unsuitable for really recent hardware, but for everyone else, there's no barrier

I do have some merch linked on all my videos, but I don't really promote it right now, because we already have sponsors, and I don't want to use too much of the video for just promotion. This could change if there are less sponsors, though!

I agree that there are many advantages long term for the increased use of immutable distros as the standard. I am currently running LMDE 6 as my daily driver. As you know, that Debian base has always dissuaded me since it tends to become pretty stale over time. But by supplementing it with Flatpaks, Snaps and AppImages it becomes pretty easy to live with long term. Very similar to the immutable approach. However, I find that the "lifeline" for this set up becomes DistroBox. Even if an app isn't available in one of the popular containers, it is super simple to whip up a version in DB that is current and fully integrated with my desktop. I believe that if immutability is to become common place, some tool along the lines of DistroBox becomes inevitable to fill the missing gaps.

Have you thought about doing merch to help with not relying too much on sponsors/ad revenue?
