Exclusive Patroncast - Episode 11

Hey everyone!

It's time for Episode 11 of your Weekly Patroncast :)

This time, we have the following topics:

- Ubuntu won't use GNOME 40 for its next release, and that's a shame

- Google is removing access to its APIs to Chromium, making it a lot less interesting as a base for third party browsers

- Google France agrees to pay for displaying news articles in Google News, which is a very dangerous first step for an open web

- Should apps that bill themselves as "letting you get free of Big Tech" use Google Cloud?

Hope you enjoy :)

Hello Nick, Interesting news this Patroncast. I wonder what Ubuntu 21.04 will bring if not gnome. As far as the Google API's go, I think this move will be welcomed by many. Brave, Vivaldi, Ungoogled Chromium and others go through a lot of trouble removing the Google stuff from their browsers. I cannot find the link now, but Brave had a detailed post with all the Google stuff they removed. For Vivaldi see here: https://vivaldi.com/blog/vivaldi-browser-vs-google-chrome/ The people that probably will be upset with this move, are Chromium users that do want to use the Google stuff. But I suppose they are also the target audience for Google Chrome anyway? The thing about big tech and Signal is sad... Reminds me of "Goodbye Big Five" by Kashmir Hill https://gizmodo.com/i-cut-the-big-five-tech-giants-from-my-life-it-was-hel-1831304194 Everything depends on the tech giants. For example search engine dependencies: DuckduckGo -> AWS Qwant -> MS Ecosia -> MS StartPage -> Google Swisscows -> Maybe the only independent one? MetaGer -> Aggregate from Bing and Google. Searx -> Google
