Walden relished the rare moment of solitude in his home. He held great affection for his roommates, Nathan, Cal, and Lukas, but their boisterous gatherings often filled the space with a cacophony that wore on his nerves. Stepping into the house, he called out in search of any response, finding himself amused by the unusual hush that enveloped the premises.
After depositing his bag in his room and shedding his socks, he let out a contented sigh, relishing the sensation of his feet bathed in the refreshing coolness of the air. A leisurely descent to the kitchen revealed nothing out of the ordinary, and he approached the fridge, eager to procure a snack.
—
Unbeknownst to Walden, Nathan, Cal, and Lukas chorused their cries as he passed by the kitchen, their voices reduced to mere whispers, their diminutive forms escaping his notice. About 35 minutes prior to Walden's return, the trio had shrunk to minuscule dimensions, inhabiting the kitchen floor as they indulged in a snack of their own.
"What are we going to do...?" Lukas mused, lowering himself to his knees. "He didn't hear us."
"We'll make another attempt," Cal asserted resolutely. "He's bound to enter the kitchen sooner or later."
"Dude, we're the size of crumbs!" Nathan grumbled in frustration. "I barely notice actual crumbs on the floor, let alone tiny people."
Cal couldn't help but concede to Nathan's point. He, too, had never paid much attention to the ground at regular size, but he couldn't abandon hope in Walden; he was their sole salvation.
Their spirited debate continued until Cal sensed a subtle vibration within the ground—a telltale thud.
"Guys...guys!" Cal hushed the others, straining to listen. "I think he's approaching."
Sure enough, the thuds grew more pronounced as Walden turned the corner into the kitchen. The three companions wasted no time darting toward their giant roommate.
"WALDEN!" they cried out as they hurried toward him. However, their voices remained too faint to elicit any response from him. To Walden, they were nonexistent, their presence eclipsed by his towering stature. Oblivious to their endeavors, he perused the contents of the fridge while his miniature roommates scurried about beneath him.
