The Idea Around Events in Ren'py (standalones)

Hey Everyone,

We’ve been getting a ton of questions lately about standalones—what they are, how they fit into Something Unlimited, and what exactly we’re trying to do with them. Every time we drop one, like Gotham, we get a wide spectrum of feedback. Some people absolutely love the new direction, others call us morons, and a whole bunch fall somewhere in between. Often confused and frustrated, with comments like, “You haven’t released anything in six months!” even though we just dropped new content.

So, let’s clear things up.

SU has always had its share of issues (trust me, I could rant for hours), but one of the biggest problems by 2023 was the lack of a coherent plot and all the unfinished events. To be fair, SR7 always had a plan. The ideas behind Gotham, Themyscira, and the rest go all the way back to 2016 or 2017. Even the overarching plot was sketched out back then. The issue was never a lack of vision. It was a matter of priorities.

Most of the development time ended up going to massive sections of the game that didn’t push the story forward, like the cells or the bordello. That left the plot sidelined.

That’s where Ren’Py and standalones come in.

If you break SU down, you’ve got the hub, the cells, the bordello, and the events. Standalone events in Ren’Py are SR7’s way of cutting through the chaos of the hub and finally giving the plot the spotlight. Technically, we were already doing “standalones” before. Those old Unity events were just bundled into the main game. Now, by using Ren’Py, we can present them as their own focused experiences with a clear story arc that moves things forward.

Each standalone is a piece of Lex’s larger plan. They’re like visual novels or comic issues. You experience each one and, together, they build toward a conclusion. That conclusion comes during the Apokolips event, which we haven’t released yet.

As of now, only two major events remain before we reach that final story payoff: Medieval and Apokolips.

Hope this clears up the confusion. Whether you love them, hate them, or don’t quite know what to make of them, the standalones are where the plot lives now. Thanks for sticking with us. We’re still building toward something big.

The main game will get it's time in the spotlight, but it will be just less frequently.

Thank you so much for the kind words. We really want to take the perspective of, if things work out we got lucky, and if things go wrong we need to look in the mirror. From there we can really grow and become better.

Only recently found out about SU, and just this month was able to go full in on supporting your work (was at the $10 per year mark, previously). Absolutely love what you're doing here. Easily one of the best H-Games I've found, and I try a LOT of them, on Steam, on Itch, here on Patreon. You've got awesome stuff, fun writing and art direction. It's been a delight to play through and well worth the entry fee. The level of explanations and transparency in your posts about the difficulties etc, is also refreshing. I'm much more accustomed to seeing attitudes of a more arrogant nature amongst H-content creators, so kudos for that as well! You've earned my support and I look forward to the future of SU and your attendant projects.

Thats a bummer, I mean I get what you guys are going for, it just feels like there's no point in playing the main game anymore.

Thank you for the clarification I was always confused by the standalones as online I was seeing content I couldn’t access.

Jimpikins

Yes of course. But there will be no difference between the two.

Will the standalone games be added to the main game in the future?

Not the end of SU. So one of the great advantages of events in Ren'py are that we can do random events at later dates. So SU can literally exist forever. As for the hub, and the other legacy content. We have brainstormed ideas regarding this content. We are just focused on the SU plot for now, and we will attack that stuff at a later date. The greatest thing about SU is the width it has, and we intend to explore so much of that width in the years to come.

Yes, you are correct that the "main" game won't be updated for a while with the new content. We're not abandoning the main game. We're just focusing on getting the main events in Ren'py completed. So the "main" game may get updates 1-2x a year, maybe more depending on content structure and timelines.

So, maybe I'm being a little dense but I'm kind of confused as to how things are going to interact between standalone events and the main game. Will stand alone events eventually get added to the main game? If not, what actually is going to be put into the main game, And how will that be updated? As it is, from the way you said things, it almost sounds like you aren't planning on actually updating the main game for a while and we'll just be focused on the standalone events. In any case, always been a big fan of your work and have been a supporter for years.

It does seem like the game engine does have problems and I’m glad you are trying to stick with it. Most people would probably abandon it and just make a sequel in the ren’py engine, but with you, you want to finish the main plot with the events and I’m glad. But I do have a question, with the planned events of Medieval and Apokolips, is that the literal end of Something Unlimited altogether or just the main plot? Or are you going back to like the cells content to finish some things, maybe expand the Cell content as there’s a lot of locked rooms in the summoning and cell rooms which suggest that you do have plans for it. Also there’s an option for the third upgrade in the upgrade device and I’m still curious of what that is. I hope one day, once you finish the events, you can find a way to make the cell content it’s own event or something just to finish what you wanted to do with that because I guess Its like seeing an unopened present that’s locked and you are like ‘What is in there’. My speculation is that the third upgrade corrupts the heroines to be villains for Lex. It would make sense that the cell content should have its own plot as there’s hints of Lex saying to Lois that he’s preparing to fight the League and has ideas to upgrade the devices and it kind of made of wonder if the plan was to corrupt the heroines to fight against their former colleagues. Like the new Legion Of Doom against the Justice League. That does seem like an interesting idea and concept and while it did not pull the plot forward and it sidelined it, I think the final arc of this game or the sequel if you need to make one is the battle against the Justice League. Anyway I hope you finish the game and maybe you can actually be able to get out of the Unity engine and make Something Unlimited 2 completely from the Ren’py engine.
