Onomatopoeia

 Should Japanese onomatopoeia be translated?

Personally i like Onomatopoeia. It adds depth to the panel. Echoing Ilia that the right font is essential to make sure it looks correct in either Japanese or English

Onomatopoeia seems to have difficult problems. And onomatopoeia rarely appears?

=3 Well then, are you Anonymous?

I'm with Caw on this one: typesetting sound effects often looks odd in English. Superhero comics do it, but only in limited doses, where it makes the most impact. Most of the action (including the sound) is illustrated, rather than described. That is probably the best approach.

For people who can understand them, the Japanese ones are a lot better than any translation (with the exception of "pomf")

I think it's worth trying.

JP sounds visually symbolize objects and values. This is like in the case of "playing the words of someone else's language" - in many cases it is impossible to translate.

I think they should be translated on the side of the pages as notes (eg. SFX: Boom). I find that typesetting them on the page looks weird, even when done properly

I think the reason why onomatopoeia doesn't get translated as often is simply because it's a pain in the neck for people editing the pictures. Since you, the creator, is making in English, that shouldn't be as much of a problem I imagine. So I say yes it should, otherwise we might get confused on what exactly is going on in some scenes. For example in that picture you posted (which looks cute btw)... I'm not sure if the sfx is supped to be like... "Boom!" from the explosion in the background or like "Zoom!" for Mieow running super fast.

Yes, but only if the typesetting that replaces it is good. It's very easy to pick a bad font for sound effects and the like.

Nah. Just leave it as is. 翻訳しなくてもいいと思います。
