20th TIME'S THE CHARM

I once set a firework off in my bedroom. It was a small one. One of those little jobs that shoots a stream of sparks out of three places on its sides so it spins furiously. I still don't know what I was thinking. It left a huge, smelly, patch of charred carpet in the middle of my bedroom. When my mom saw it she didn't even say anything. She just looked tired. I think about that a lot.

That's how I remember them too. The ones you get today are so wimpy that you can't do that anymore. They barely snap when you throw them.

We had those snappers too! essentially a box full of sawdust and like six snappers. I would smash them between my fingers because it made me feel like Superman crushing a bullet or something.

OMG LMAO. Ur personal story. Priceless.

We used to throw those little snappers at each other. They didn’t hurt but man did we act like wusses when they did hit.

That is the best Mother's Day story that I have ever heard. Thank you. You owe your Momma a new floor.

Your story ending could’ve been much, much worse. Mothers of bright, adventurous children learn to take these kinds of things in stride. You had a good mother.

Growing up in Iowa, far from the state lines, I had very little experience with fireworks. When I was really young, we didn't even have caps for cap pistols. In my teen years we could get caps, smoke bombs, snakes, and sparklers. Now, I live in Nebraska, where most fireworks are legal for 10 days before Independence day, to the day itself, and a shorter period before New Years Day.
