Pigtown RPG Devlog #4: Character Sheet (Version 1)

Sorry for the relative silence over the last week or so, doing all of those captions last month kind of sapped my energy, on top of the election and a bunch of other stuff going on as well. In any case, progress on the RPG system has continued, and I feel like I can show you all something a bit more tangible, which is the first mockup of a character sheet!

This is a little mockup for a character that might be just starting out. There are still some mechanics here that are missing--there will eventually be a backside to the sheet as well, but hopefully no more than that. There are also some mechanics on here that will probably under go some reworking, because I'm not super happy with them at the moment.

A few things I'll point out first. I added a new mechanic which is Body Type. Body Type is something like a racial modifier, which is to say, it comes with a few passive bonuses to things like health, defensive skills, and maybe a few active skills, depending on the kind of body you have. Players get to select two to start, allowing players to choose a combination of types for more variation. At the moment, there are seven, but there could be more added. Wes, up there, is a chub bear, which is more of a defensive build. The other five body types are: Average (a neutral choice), twink (bonuses to reflexes), muscle (bonus to physical skills), fireplug (bonuses to tenacity and defense), and giant (bonuses to vigilance and notice, as well as some physical skills).

Unlike most racial characteristics in games like this, body type can be changed, either by the player taking actions within the game, or by things like items, curses, drinks, etc. The body type your character starts will might not be the one they end up with! But that's how Pigtown goes, right?

Up at the top you can see that there's a role as well, which is basically this engine's class mechanic. However, beyond helping set your characters' starting skill sets, roles don't determine how a character grows, but it does encourage you to role play your character accordingly. Wes up there is a bouncer, a role build around characters who spend a lot of their time at night in bars, whether they're working or drinking. There are a number of roles to choose from, mostly dealing with how your character survives in Pigtown. I'll go more into those in a later devlog, once I have them a bit more fleshed out.

The skill list below is still a bit in flux, but for the most part, this is what it will probably look like. There are both combat and non-combat skills intermixed there. I'm also still working out how sex is going to work in the game as well. At the moment, sex works similarly to combat, but I don't know if I want to keep it that way or not, or try a different sort of mechanic. Another thing still being tweaked is organizations, which I've mentioned in prior devlogs. However, I don't know if I want these to work as literal skills, or as some other sort of mechanic, more like spells and powers. Some of the knowledge skills will also probably be tweaked to some extent.

As for things that you can't see here, I'm still working on the more fantastic/magical side of things. Inventory, weapons, tools, things like that are also not fleshed out much. That said, if you have questions about what you see here that you'd like to know more about, I'd be happy to discuss it, just drop your comments and questions below, and I'll get them answered.

Fireplug is a slang term for a guy who's short and stocky. You know, like a fire hydrant, or "fireplug".

Wesley Bracken

What kinda body type is fireplug?

Sub6Snoopy

There is a role which is a "mechanic", and yeah, those are some of the main skills you get.

Wesley Bracken

Basically, yes. Recall skills are actually used so the player can add details to the world, which a lore book wouldn't necessarily go into detail on. So, if you are recalling something about, say, a bar, and want a way in, you could use a recall skill to say, "I recall that bar having a window into the men's room that doesn't lock," or something like that. Utilize skills are more about, like, knowing how to repair an engine, or how to open an electronic lock on a safe, or knowing how to mix a drug that will give you an erection for eight hours.

I am trying to suss out my biker mechanic in my head as you go along. It looks like I need to focus on Knowledge and Reflex, with some Fortitude. Skills would be Apply Force, Ride/Drive, and Utilize-Mechanics,

Eric Roesch

So Utilizes are physical skills (things you do), while Recalls are lore skills (things you know)?
