Talking About What to Talk About

Hey everyone! Hope your Monday is treating you well.

This week, I am going to write about skill checks in 5e and how the labels used to describe DCs in the game are inaccurate. I'm also going to share an alternate approach to skill checks that can help drive the action forward in your game. That post will go up on Tuesday.

If there are specific topics you want to see me hit, sound off in the comments.

I generally play skill checks a bit loosey goosey. It’s a great way to bring attention back to the game by saying “everyone give me a perception check”. Whenever I have something I want the players to notice… I’ll have them all roll perception checks… an inevitably several will pass. For me the roll is more about who saw the reveal. 12, 15, 20 and 25…. Tend to be the numbers I pick for DC targets depending if I want them to likely succeed, medium chance of success or low chance at success. 20 or 25 are my typical OD&D targets (d20+entireStat). Interested to see where you modulate from what’s in the books!
