I've started rendering my animations in 4k! Woo. I'm still going to make 1080p versions because 4k60 is kinda hard to run and the videos are fairly big.
I've also added a new supporter tier, if you're interested! The tier has no additional benefits, I didn't want to put the 4k videos behind a bigger paywall. It's just a way to better support me ๐

Quick (late) pic for DMC's 20th anniversary! As you may be able to tell I rendered this in Cycles (the renderer I used for almost all of 2020) instead of Eevee (what I originally used and then switched back to at the end of 2020) so it looks better. Hopefully ๐ฌ
Will I stick with it? I don't know. I found out that Cycles X in the Blender 3.0 alpha is still pretty alpha and buggy, and E-Cycles (third party renderer that I used to use) is... also pretty buggy ๐คทโโ๏ธ Had to use normal Blender 2.93 Cycles to render this, which is about 50% slower than Cycles X/E-Cycles. Still way faster than it was before my new CPU/GPU though!
I'm also still working on the Mei anim I swear! I made this while baking the fluids for the preggo version. When will it be done? That's a good question...
Managed to get a 3090 last Friday (off of Newegg at 3 in the morning ๐คช) and now it's here ๐๐
I need to get this out of the way first though:
Yes, that IS another video card below it. That's my old 2060 Super. Yes, they are different cards. Yes, they are not connected via SLI or NVLink. Yes, SLI is dead and almost nothing supports NVLink. Yes. I know! But the Cycles engine in Blender (specifically Cycles, not Eevee) supports rendering with two (or more) video cards at the same time, even if they're different cards/not linked together/ect. So that's why I have two cards in there. Good? Good.
The temperature of both GPUs seems fine. While doing these tests the 3090 reached a peak temp of 79c (2060 Super reached 69 heh heh) It certainly blows a lot of hot air out of the back of the case though... CPU temp doesn't seem to be different at all.
As is tradition, here are some nerd benchmarks because I love me some nerd benchmarks ๐ค Benchmarks done in Cycles also done in Blender 3.0 benchmarks with Cycles X!
3090 is much faster! Both cards is... a little faster.
Blender Classoom (Blender 3.0, Cycles X, OptiX, CPU + GPU, Cycles X doesn't use tiles :O)
2060 Super: 21 seconds
3090: 13 seconds
2060 + 3090: 12 seconds
Cycles X is much faster! It might not seem like much of a difference here, but in both Cycles and Cycles X renders the single 3090 is 61% faster than the 2060! :o
Blender BMW, GPU only (Blender 2.93, Cycles, OptiX)
2060 Super: 34 seconds
3090: 9 seconds
2060 + 3090: 18 seconds
Much faster. I think the dual cards is slower in this example because of the gigantic tile size (512x512), so the 3090 finishes rendering its tile before the 2060, then has to wait for the 2060 to be done? ๐ค
Blender BMW, GPU only (Blender 3.0, Cycles X, OptiX)
2060 Super: 14 seconds
3090: 8 seconds
2060 + 3090: 7 seconds
...Dual cards is a tiny bit faster in this one though. Probably because Cycles X doesn't use tiles?
Blender Spaceship (Eevee, 2k samples)
2060 Super: 37 seconds
3090: 17 seconds
Yep. Faster. Can't use both cards at the same time in Eevee though!
Again, those are artificial benchmarks, We need real world examples ๐

Brig Expansion (Blender 2.93, Cycles, OptiX, CPU + GPU, 32 tiles, 800 samples) (last anim I made in Cycles)
2060 Super: 8:09 (489 seconds) (honestly that's estimated after like 3 mins of rendering, didn't feel like waiting LOL)
... This is where it starts getting confusing. Both cards is slower? I tried rendering it without the CPU, GPU Only:
3090: 2:00 (120 seconds)
2060 + 3090: 1:34 (94 seconds)
I don't get it ๐คทโโ๏ธ CPU rendering with OptiX is fairly new, so maybe it's not that optimized/Cycles X still has work to do with CPU rendering?
Dual cards provides even less of a boost! Tried rendering without CPU, GPU Only again:
3090: 35 seconds
2060 + 3090: 32 seconds
...again rendering with CPU is slower. I went back and tried rendering the Tracer/Widow anim in 2.92 with the GPUs only (at a much higher tile size) and it rendered 10 seconds slower than with CPU ๐ค
So Cycles X is really good! ...sometimes. Mot of the time. Sometimes it crashes a lot. When trying to render the Brig anim it kept crashing my drivers and I had to restart my PC to get it to stop crashing ๐คทโโ๏ธ Then it stopped crashing. Hasn't crashed since. I dunno. Such is life with alpha software. It's implementation of CPU rendering also doesn't seem very good.
So what's the biggest takeaway from this? Well, that Brig anim would have taken me:
65 hours in 2.93 render with my 2060
30 hours in 3.0 with the 2060
12 hours in 3.0 with the 2060 and 3090 ๐
And the Tracer/Widow anim:
22 hours in 2.93 with the 2060
12 hours in 3.0 with the 2060
4 hours in 3.0 with the 2060 and 3090 ๐
The Mei (Eevee) anim took 6.5 hours to render with the 2060, and would/will only take 2.7 hours with the 3090 :o
I'm not sure what I'm going to do though. I might try going back to Cycles? (I switched from Cycles back to Eevee in December of last year, got tired of Cycles' render times... Cycles X didn't exist back then :p) If not I could start rendering 4k animations in Eevee ๐ค Who knows? I certainly don't ๐คช

This was supposed to be another "quick" anim but it kinda kept getting longer and longer. Still a lot faster than my usual 2-4 weeks though :p
I think next up I'm going to make a pic (with Nyl's recently released RE8 daughter models ๐) and then get back doing my "normal" animations. I think the biggest takeaway from these quick anims has been that maybe I don't actually have to spend 4 weeks on an animation to make it good ๐ค What do you guys think about these quicker/shorter animations?
So this is one of those quick animations I wanted to do. Made this in 3 days. If you've been following me for a while you'll know that me making an animation in 3 days is ridiculously fast. That's the fastest I've made an animation in over two years. I want to do a few more quick animations, so hopefully this isn't too bad ๐ฌ

New PC helped a lot though! This used 22GB of RAM while it was rendering. I don't even know if I could render it on my old PC ๐ New CPU also helped baking all those physics go a loooot faster ๐

Wanted to post a cool taken-in-the-dark pic like everyone else does but as you can see it has ALMOST no RGB so that doesn't really work ๐ค (RGB sucks btw) So instead you get an almost completely empty black box :p

Taken from my old PC are the Gigabyte 2060 Super, EVGA 750w P2, and some drives. First PC I've ever built that doesn't have a DVD drive, and can't have a DVD drive... because there's no slot for it ๐คช
Still need to get an RTX 3090 ๐ค (And a new PSU for it, lol)
And here are benchmarks! Everybody loves benchmarks. Especially me ๐
Blender BMW, CPU only (Cycles)
i5-4690k: 10:37 (637 seconds)
5950x: 1:41 (101 seconds)
These are "artificial" Blender benchmarks. While the CPU only render is 530.7% better that doesn't mean too much for me since you wouldn't only render using a CPU anyway. The other two only use the GPU for the actual rendering part; a better CPU only slightly helps speed it up because it can build the scene before rendering faster.
But those are artificial benchmarks. Who cares about those? We need r e a l world examples ๐
Liara Jump render (Eevee)
i5-4690k: 35 seconds
5950x: 30 seconds
Like before, actual rendering part is done with GPU only. Better CPU helps build the scene faster.
Baking physics is done entirely via CPU so it helps a lot. Blender doesn't seem to utilize the 5950x that well though, it only used ~30% of my CPU while baking. Little disappointing ๐
Lady D/Jill viewport FPS
i5-4690k: 11-12 FPS
5950x: 28-30 FPS (capped ๐)
The Lady D model I've been using is FUCKED when it comes to CPU usage. Used 100% of my old CPU while playing an animation back in the viewport. Uses ~45% of the 5950x.
You have NO IDEA how painful using her model has been... until now เฒฅโกเฒฅ
Brig/DVA Creampie liquid physics bake (estimated, because I'm not waiting that long LOL)
i5-4690k: 9 hours 13 minutes
5950x: 1 hour 6 minutes
Big improvement. Large. Huge. Massive. ๐ FLIP Fluids (liquid physics addon) seems to utilize lots of cores/threads better than Blender's built-in physics stuff.
More liquid physics (coom, milk, ect) soon? ๐ (I can't say the c world in a public post LOL)
Reencoding 34 second 60FPS 1080p video in FFmpeg (Brig/DVA Creampie anim)
i5-4690k: 116 seconds
5950x: 65 seconds
FFmpeg doesn't handle lots of cores/threads that well. Not that big of an improvement all things considered ๐ค
Flowframes interpolates the frames and then uses FFmpeg to stick them back together, same as the above result really.
I actually overclocked the CPU a little since I did all these benchmarks. Got it about 6% faster :O But I'm too lazy to redo all the benchmarks :p
New PC is also a MASSIVE quality of life improvement for basically everything Blender. All the little things are way faster. Used to take 3-5 seconds to calculate subdivision modifiers, now it's almost instant. And 128GB of RAM means I should never run out of RAM... ever. Also my old PC was straight up dying anyway... never started up on the first try, programs would randomly not open until I restarted, USB drives stopped working for the most part...
This all wouldn't have been possible without all of your support, so thank you all ๐
