WotR Chapter 40: You Jinxed It

2/11 Bent remaining.

By the gods, I’m actually doing it, Cal thought, overlooking the dozen siege towers and their thousands of men that had been brought to a standstill. We just might make it.

In another ten minutes or so, they could expect the runners to get back with reinforcements, and everyone currently on the wall could drag themselves to their bunks and sleep for a week.

You totally jinxed it.

Chapter 203: Watch what you Think

“Stick out your tongue and say ah.”

“Ah,” The tiny Gorn stuck out his tongue and Garth used a tongue depressor to check his tiny tonsils, followed by a stethoscope to the chest to listen to his tiny heartbeat.

“Well, Mr. Gorn, from what I can see, you seem to have come down with a sudden case of Avatar Syndrome,” Garth said, taking the stethoscope off his ears. Garth wasn’t the absolute most knowledgeable man in the multiverse, but compared to everyone else in this d...

WotR Chapter 39: Bad Penny

***Calvin***

Calvin made it three steps away from the strange creature, when a thought occurred to him. He glanced over his shoulder at the curled-up monster pinned to the stone wall like an old man’s prized arc beetle.

I wonder if I can use Harvester on it? I only have five Bent left, though... Calvin put his fingers into his vest pocket and yanked out the tiny vial of viscous black Bent, popping the tall cork off with his thumb.

One out of eig...

Should the Harvest ability work on a robot?

So I gave him the ability rather than any of the other awesome hunting abilities because exotic creatures are going to come along fairly often and I want the MC to have a story-based way to quickly and easily harvest their more interesting pieces-parts.

I previously wrote that the previously damaged scent glands were repaired and packaged, so if The robot is eligible, the ability may be able to restore all the the robots parts to functionality, albeit separated completely from each othe...

Chapter 202: Side Effects Include Ninja Lawnmower Rocks

Captain’s log:

Two months in, and here’s where we stand on Practice Stone research.

First, the obvious. An object has to be being used for its purpose for the Practice Effect to come into play. This means that something that passively does its job, like the sun or the water condenser, is constantly Practicing, while something like a bow is not being used for its purpose if it’s just sitting there.

Second. Sentient and Sapient creature...

Jean One

The apocalypse begins.

The original intention of Jean One was to be the first of a kind of hybrid human killing machine...Kind of like Species...a dumb alien movie from the nineties whose only saving grace was the supermodels.

So the question is, what direction should we go with her?

WotR Chapter 38: Terminate

The toe of Calvin’s boot pushed against the stone, his fingers felt a brief sensation of the stonework as he clawed his way forward, moving faster than his mind could keep up with.

He felt like he was watching his limbs move from a long tunnel, detatched from the image moving in front of him.

Wait, why are you moving towards it!? A distant voice echoed in his ears, but he was already passing it by, mentally and physically.

It wasn’t about h...

Chapter 201: Jean-O-Cide

Dragus was meditating and upkeeping the intricate spellwork inscribed on his heartstone by his very soul, sharpening the lines, modifying the distribution of colors, seeking the ideal. In the unlikely even that someone were to tear out his heartstone right this second, it would be like the most hypnotic opal anyone had ever seen, with purples, greens, oranges and yellows flickering like fire inside.

Dragus knew because he’d done it to people like himself before.

Chapter 37: The Second Wave

As it turns out, Wasp behavior is rather limited. Cal thought, tapping his vial of Bent on the wall, watching it glitter in morning sun that was rising over his left shoulder. The orders a wasp could be easily expected to perform were ‘go there’ and ‘kill’.

As if Ella needs a reason to be any more smug.

After experimenting for a while, he’d discovered their carrying capacity was a little over two thirds of their body weight.

And that meant he ne...

Chapter 200: Scientists with Benefits

“So here’s what I want to do,” Garth said, sitting beside Alicia in the village hot tub, taking a dip with the rest of the Terrafell natives. Needless to say no one was wearing anything, including the wrinkly village elder.

Bleh.

They had kicked the kids out to have a moot of the more influencial villagers. The Elder, a few hunters, and their wives.

“The Practice Effect has to get it’s direction from us. A purpose has never been an objective fac...

“The big one.” Cal said, handing the spyglass back to her.

Andra peered through the tube for a moment before letting out an appreciative whistle.

“Damn, that boy could match a Guar. Shame he’s an archer.”

“He did just put a hole through solid stone.”

“You sure it was him?” Andra said, glancing back at Cal.

“He’s the best archer in the village, by far. He was practically a savant with one Break. If he’s h...

Calvinian summoning poll

Jeez you guys had a lot of ideas, I was blown away. I'll try to get as many of them as I arbitrarily deem passable as I can in here. I'll narrow down similar ideas to one to clean it up.

Chimera: The user may rearrange parts from any slotted creature onto any other slotted creature in any combination.(New slot every 10th level)

Heart of the Swarm: Your mass may be added to the effect of Calvinian Summoning. You disintegrate into the summoning, controlling the swarm from i...

Calvinian summoning abilities and mutations.

I realized that Calvinian summoning is going to level next, so I need ideas for abilities to vote on.

I want the benefits from Calvinian summoning to focus mostly on the physical. maybe mutating it's creation, or making it more poisonous, or adding mass, armor, or strength. etc. all physical things.

on the flip side, I want benefits from Chained Spirit to mostly be intangible, such as the ability for the summon to remember what happened i...

Chapter 199: The Practice Effect

They were getting closer to the Core. The plant-based tunneler had popped out into a benign room, and Garth took the opportunity to take a break for the day. His body didn’t strictly need rest, but his mind did. That seemed to be the currency that this dungeon dealt in, Effort of Will.

“Just because it didn’t kill us right away or make us try to kill ourselves doesn’t mean it’s benign. I’d like to know what it does before I’m willing to sleep in it.” Alicia said, glancing...

Chapter 35: On the Wall

“How can such a little thing hit so hard?” Ella said, rubbing the bruises across her body as they lay across from each other in the barracks.

They had gotten a few strange looks, but after a while, the other soldiers simply dismissed Ella as a quirk of Cal being a Wizard and further evidence that he couldn’t possibly as common as he professed to be.

Nobles often took their servants or trusted slaves with them anywhere they went.

“You got in a few good hits, too. S...

Chapter 198: Facets

“Get back here, you sonofabitch,” Stick-Together Garth growled, tackling the sprinting Finish-the-Dungeon Garth to the ground and pinning him there with thick bands of wood.

“No, you don’t understand, I’ve got to get to the end!”

“And you will, but we need all of us to get there, damnit!” Stick-together said, glancing at the other Garths aimlessly wandering around the room, one laughing manically while one wept into his palms. The rest just seemed kind of d...

I could see this, when properly harnessed, to provide matter or energy of whatever kind desired...or you know, just toss it at someone and watch them melt.

Long story short, Missed.

So the first day there, we almost died to dangers I forgot to mention: Hypothermia and bumblefucking.

so after a good ten hours on the road, heading north from where we lived, we arrived at a gold claim just north of Chicken Alaska, which is a gold mining camp in it's own right. it was nine forty, an dthe sun was starting to go down (Since it's summer)

The old sourdough who was showing us where our claim was (she bought it from him) was like, "Are you sure you wanna set up camp ...

I'll be gone for a while, no electricity, no internet, so in the comments, I would love to hear where you think either of the series are going, especially what surprises might be waiting for us. If your guess is better than my plan, I...

“So the Guya, when used properly,” Ella said, motioning with her hands. “Establishes a very strong, very stable bond, with an uenha, and a Poeor.”

Kala glanced up at the translator, who shrugged. It seemed like the words went over his head too. She looked back down at the pink aura flickering out of her body, looking like a flame that pointed in the direction of Calvin. It was like the Genosian girl was a Calvin Compass.

Seer level 5

So I wanted Kala to be POV when she gets Seer level 5. Let's throw up some skills to vote on. Remember, no mutations, but what's a skill and what's a mutation are kind of fluid.

I've got two maybe examples to put forward. The Seer skill is mildly drug related, so drugs can be used to gate extra powerful abilities, like the ability to receive the answer to any question.

Chapter 197: Forward Progress

“I don’t exactly have all of forever to spend down here, so let’s do this the most efficient way,” Garth said as they rested against the wall of the dungeon. This particular place had smooth cobbled walls that stood straight up, unlike the previous layer of the dungeon.

A dungeon was created as an extradimensional spore burrowed through the planet’s crust, looking for the juicy center to feed off of. This particular dungeon had an unknown number of layers, and was mutated as...

Law crystals? -Artifact?

So every dungeon has a valuable export. Except for this one, which no one has ever returned from. It is also mutated to focus almost all of its effort into creating special rules for how reality works inside the dungeon, rather than make monsters or anything. People wind up killing themselves or starving before they get out.

a thought that occurred to me is that this place has never, ever been harvested, and in a dungeon this highly mutated, it might be growing some unique rea...

Outer Sphere Dungeon Laws

Yo you remember that one time I very very briefly mentioned dungeons mutating special regional effects that make it difficult to conquer them? 'course you do.

I want to design a fun dungeon with cool regional effects, that'll keep the MC going for, let's say, 10 or so chapters...maybe more if it's a lot of fun.

the effect that is 100% going to be in there, is that the dungeon cannot be exited, meaning it must be destroyed before you can leave.

Example regional effects:
