121 - Mutation Expert

I was sitting in the waiting room of a research lab that mostly concerned itself with mutations. Today was the day where I would finally meet the mutation expert after having pushed back our meeting due to my sleep issues. After already having met with Professor Solum and having learned so many new things about skills, I was looking forward to seeing what I could learn about mutations. After all, they were pretty important to a monster such as myself.

While I was excited for what was bo...

119 - Learning About Skills

I entered the office of Professor Solum, the skill expert that had agreed to meet with me. After having to postpone our meeting after my little sleeping episode, it was finally time for our make-up appointment. His office was furnished in a rather cozy manner, making it believe that it was mostly used for meetings. A big circular rug dominated most of the room, providing a platform for three green couches arranged in a U-shape around a low table. On the open side of the U was a large desk, a ...

117 - Village Quest 1

Took a while to write this one. The busy season at work is slowly petering out and I'm going to have a bit more time to write in the coming months. The injured guy at work is also coming back, so no more taking over shifts, and occasionally going back to the work where I got loads of free time.  Next one shouldn't take ten days to write :)

I'm back!

Hello everybody!

I'm back after my month-long break! Now, it's not all sunshine and rainbows, I'm afraid. Taking my break made me realize just how much I'd been stressing about putting out regular chapters over the past year. I've practically been worrying about "having to write" every single day. I cannot tell you how nice it was to just not think about any of that stuff during the break I took. I originally thought that after the break I'd be full of motivation to write and participat...

116 - Quest Complete!

I slowly awoke to the sound of the hustle and bustle of Lophan wafting in through the open window. Proper consciousness returned to me in waves and I felt great, snuggled into my sheets as I was, even if they were drenched in mucus and probably needed to be burned after I got up. I noticed that I’d shaken off the year-long tiredness that I’d grown so accustomed to that I forgot about it. The only thing missing from this perfect morning was a good and proper stretch to get the blood flowin...

Poll about skills and mutations

Hey there, I'm currently enjoying my break from writing, but I've recently started spending some time planning out the chapters going forward. As you might be able to guess, these include the meetings with both the skill and the mutation experts. Now, I have my own ideas and things I want them to reveal to Gary about some mechanics that he may not know about yet and skills/mutations that he should get because they complement what he has/are considered staples.

I'm certain that I'll over...

Gary in various evolution stages

I had this commissioned to show off some of Gary's evolutions! Tier 0, 2, and 4 got left out because nothing really changes visually there.

I'm sure you all remember that all the various tentacles are retractable, but I still included them since those images are supposed to be a sort of anatomy page thing. Once again, I was able to commission this thanks to your support. Thanks a lot and I hope you look forward to seeing more!

114 - The Library

After I’d spent most of the day talking with Professor Wotan, I had made the appointments to meet with the experts. They were apparently very busy since their services were very popular among the Asphons, and not even I could squeeze past the droves of people wanting to consult with them. Once they heard who it was that wanted to make use of their expertise, though, they did move me up the list quite a bit. As such, I’d be meeting with the skill expert in five days, and the mutation exper...

Announcement

Hello everybody, an important announcement from yours truly.

Recently I've noticed a rather substantial increase in chapter length, which is in no small part due to what you're about to read. When I made my "1 chapter every 4 days" policy, I calculated this for chapters that are about half as long as the recent chapters are. My workload has increased quite a bit, and since my recent vacations, I have lost any kind of wiggle room I had. I've been steadily posting and writing for almost a...

112 - Speakeasy

I weaved my way through the crowd, following Orbos as he led me to our destination. What that destination is? I had no clue. After I exited my room this morning I found him all alone in the living room and, after telling me that he was bored, he got all excited and told me to follow him. A surprise, he said. By now I had spent enough time with Nimma and her team to know that they were invested in my well-being, so following him around for a bit shouldn’t be detrimental.

That was about...

111 - Knocking Out A Few Quests

After the relative ease of completing my first quest, I decided that I wanted to be productive and do a few more. There was a lot to do in Lophan and I could technically have a good time and relax for longer, but I had this odd sense of duty that pushed me forward. I had grown so used to pushing myself further and further, always chasing my goals, the next evolution, that I had apparently grown incapable of relaxing for an extended period of time. It didn’t help that I simply enjoyed the fi...

I’d primarily been loafing around for the past three days, trying different ways to relax. The spa had been a nice change of pace for sure and the employees there did their best to make me comfortable, but at the end of the day, I was still an alien species they knew close to nothing about. Some of the other things I’d tried included organizing a big barbecue for us, which was pretty fun, all things considered, even if I could not taste any of the good food.

I truly thought that hav...

Chapters are getting longer

Hello everyone!

I've recently noticed an uptrend in chapter length, which is nice for you and, mildly annoying for me. Back when I introduced the chapter every four days schedule, all of my chapters were around 1.3k to 1.6k words long. This allowed for a leisurely, yet consistent pace. I could just write about 500 words a day, and get a day off in between chapters.

Recently, chapters are hovering between 2.3k to 3k+ words, meaning they are easily twice as long as they used t...

109 - R&R

I was led out of the government building and back into the bustling plaza occupying the center of Lophan. Even though I’d been reassured that it was no problem, I had once again apologized for spreading my slime all over their nice carpets in the office. But, with that little hiccup behind us, Nimma led us down a street not too far from the offices, quickly arriving at a rather quaint house.

Most of the buildings in Lophan, and the seventh layer as a whole so far, had been highrises. ...

108 - Lophan... again, but different

We walked into the building's foyer where a steady stream of Asphons was walking to and fro. It was a bit funny how these large monstrosities were walking around with comparably tiny suitcases and I even spotted one that had a tie on. Of course, they didn’t wear any other clothing, which made the tie look hilariously out of place. There was no reception area down here, just several large tablets full of writing, no doubt describing which floor contained which offices. It would appear that A...

As we crossed the perimeter of rubble, the guards on the wall noticed our approach. I could see them pointing at us and getting excited, most likely because they spotted me among their fellow Asphons. As I’d learned, travelers were somewhat of a big deal around here and they should be looking forward to all the benefits I’d bring to their city. As of yet, I was unsure about exactly what these benefits looked like, but I’m sure I’d get to see once I completed a few quests. We continued...

106 - Q&A

I did just state that I had a lot of questions, and I really did, yet when it was finally time to ask them I found myself unable to decide which question to ask first. The presence of the Asphons was a bombshell I still hadn’t entirely processed. And, the whole thing that was going on down here was another bag of worms entirely. Up to this point, I’d essentially been riding the wave, going with the flow, while trying to parse as much information as I possibly could.

Asphons were sti...

As soon as I gave the sign, Nimma and Jugan exploded into motion, rushing at each other with weapons drawn. Nimma was wielding a shortsword and a shield while Jugan was carrying a flail with him. They clashed mere moments after the fight began, Nimma trying her best to defend herself from the flail with her shield while looking for an opening to strike. Jugan was swinging his weapon around at lightning speed and Nimma had trouble keeping up.

Jugan activated a skill, causing his weapon t...

Any questions you'd like to see answered?

Now, with the introduction of the (redacted for non-patrons that can still see the opening blurb), Gary obviously just got access to a lot of information. There are certain things that I will have him get answers for, obviously, but I was wondering whether or not you guys had questions that could get answered in his time on the seventh layer.

I can't promise that the questions will be included, especially since they are too meta or if it doesn't make sense for Gary to inquire abou...

I stared at the group of Asphons with a slack jaw and they stared back, neither of us making any moves. Well, I assumed they were looking at me. It was kind of hard to tell due to them only having a faceplate with no eyes as a… face. I took the few moments that passed like this to process what I was looking at. These guys were honest to god Asphons. The race of monsters that resulted from that spell that went horribly, horribly wrong. I remembered the last memory I’d viewed, where their e...

The elevator rushed past smooth stone, guiding me ever closer to the next layer. As I continued rushing down, I excitedly wondered about what kind of biome I would find down there. There had been all kinds of weird and fantastical settings, and I honestly had no clue what could be next. To take my mind off what was to come, I started studying my new spell matrixes for a bit. Void rend was quite the complex spell, as expected of an S-tier spell, but it somehow still paled in comparison to void...

The memory deposited me outside of the obsidian palace, giving me a bird's eye view of the massive building. Yet something about it was different from the one I’d seen just an hour or so ago. It took me a second to realize why it looked different, but as the memory began to slowly get closer to the palace, I realized what was going on. The palace was still under construction. There were several half-finished spires currently being built upwards slowly. It looked like there was somebody mani...

After splashing into the lava, something that still felt odd since lava really shouldn’t behave like that, I started descending as fast as I could. I still couldn’t see anything due to the lavas brightness, but as long as I kept swimming against the current I would be fine. The lava was constantly rushing to the surface, providing great guidance to me. As I kept going further and further down, I started worrying about monsters.
