He snatched a few hours of sleep, but only after thoroughly searching the surroundings with his ghosts. The ravine was still relatively close to the rift, and therefore still highly active. Packs of kin roamed past regularly, on their way to the broken land to try and push through to his home realm. Luckily, very few wanted to pass through the ravine he had settled in, and those that did were handled by his undead without making too much noise.
When he awoke, blinking, for a mome...

Morrelia gripped the hilts of her dual blades tight, but knew she wouldn’t get the opportunity to use them. Ants were watching her at all times, and she’d been instructed not to participate and throw off their carefully laid plans. The Colony moved with incredible efficiency, every member knowing where they needed to be at any given moment. On the surface, it looked like chaos, giant insects crawling all over each other, working here and there, carrying, moulding, enchanting, digging, but...

It’s amazing how quickly a week can go by when you’re trying to make sure you haven’t jinxed your entire family. In a blink, we are back at the entrance to the fifth, waiting to descend back into the stratum. This time, we’ve scaled up the size of our exploratory team to double what it was before. A thousand wuffers, ten thousand ants, me and the crew, along with our Legion onlookers.
[Are you really sure you want to go down there?] I ask Morrelia. [It’s gross. And not in a ca...

So… Morrelia is going to hang out with the Colony again. That’s… fine. It’s fine.
Though if her two fellow Legionaries could stop looking at me like I spat on their mother’s kitchen floor, I’d appreciate it.
I mean, I get it. They think that all the monsters they see around them are going to turn insane and submit to the will of the Ancients, thus turning against all non-monstrous life on Pangera. Every ant they see is a future enemy, so why would you b...

Tyron slumped against the wall of the ravine, gasping for breath.
Holy fuck. That’d been close!
He raised a hand to brush the sweat from his eyes, only to find it shaking slightly. It wasn’t surprising. For a moment there, he’d truly felt that he would never see his home realm again.
Once again, he checked his minions, looked through the eyes of his watching ghosts, just to ensure that he was secure. When he’d confirmed there were no kin in the nearby...

“Oh… oh, I don’t like the smell of that at all.”
Her antennae waggled furiously as she tried to waft away the stink of whatever sorcery had been performed here. Whoever had performed it had gone to great lengths to scrub the signs away, but they hadn’t expected someone with her level of intelligence coming onto the scene.
After all…
“I’M BRILLIANT!” she declared to the empty room, then cackled gleefully.
She had so many things to do, s...

“Be careful, Tribune. The monster may attempt to manipulate your thoughts.”
Morrelia frowned.
“I’ve receive mental fortitude training and raised my Skills to the commander level,” she said evenly, “I will of course remain vigilant nevertheless. Thank you for your diligence, Legionary.”
[What’d he say?] Anthony’s voice echoed in her mind.
[They’re still worried you’ll manipulate me,] she sighed.

Tyron and his ‘honour guard’ were the first to go through the rift. He wasn’t willing to send his skeletons into a fight he couldn’t see and risk losing many of them. Who knew what monstrosity could be awaiting him on the other side?
After holding his area of the defensive perimeter around the rift, he pushed forward and allowed the other slayer teams to cover the space behind him as he prepared himself to advance. It wouldn’t be the first time he’d crossed over a rif...

When people play sports and get together after a game, they’re all standing around drinking… sports juice… or whatever, talking about the game and clapping each other on the back, it’s always such a heartwarming scene, such an inviting feeling.
Not that I would know, I’ve never been a part of something like that in my entire life. In my human life, anyway.
However, this here, this must have been what that would have felt like. After our successful ef...

The break was really nice, thanks to everyone for your patience and understanding. The family is (mostly) well. Some things just seem to want to linger forever, but on the whole, much better off over here! Thanks for all the kind words and wishes. What a lovely group of people you all are! :D
Morrelia was very grateful not to be on a boat any longer. She would serve no matter where the Legion chose to send her, but she much preferred...

Things are looking pretty decent down here. Well, by ‘things’, I don’t mean the environment, that’s for sure. It still sucks down here. Big time. But, the work of the Colony has been immensely successful. We’ve been able to maintain our foothold here in the fifth for two days, and I’ve spent the last few hours taking a break within the cleansed mana zone, poking the wuffers with my antennae.
Everytime I give them a prod, they wobble like sentient jelly, wiggling in delight a...

It's that time of year again and I have caught the covid.
Whoo.
It's going around town and pretty much whole family is sick at the moment, so I'm going to go ahead and take a week off. I really don't want to do this on such short notice, patreon subs being what they are, but in this case, I think I need to take some time off to rest.
Hopefully people have been enjoying the much more regular schedule lately. I've felt a lot better about my productivity la...

Zluth could hardly believe what his eyestalks were seeing. Just to be certain, he extended them up from the pool of muca-sludge he’d currently flattened his body into a little further. The same sight met his gaze.
The ants from above… had descended?
And not just descended… they were… attempting to purify the fifth!
It was so absurd it almost made him want to laugh. It was so infuriating it almost caused his slug flesh to boil. How dare they? HOW ...

Tyron stood, looking down once again on the Broken Lands. The rift at Cragwhistle was much too small to produce such an intense reality-warping effect, but here it was just as bad as he remembered. The realm itself seemed to twist and shudder as the rifts spewed a torrent of magickal energy forth in an endless stream of power. He was more sensitive to it now, the movement and flow of energy had been his study for the past several years during his Arcanist training, but here, standing so close...

To purify the fifth’s mana is an absurd idea, a comical suggestion. It’s impossible, everyone knows it’s impossible, and not because we haven’t tried, or made half-hearted attempts. Hundreds and thousands have died, enough resources to bankrupt an empire have been spent, over several attempts, some by individual empires, some by conglomerates of several major powers.
All have been unsuccessful. Not only unsuccessful, but unmitigated disasters. Even when these...

Tyron and company had indeed been allowed within the walls, and while Elsbeth and Munhilde hurried to meet with the other members of their faith, Rurin ushered him and the three students to a less salubrious part of town.
“There aren’t enough people to need these buildings, so this part of town hasn’t been repaired,” she told him cheerfully. “Since you seem so confident in your labourers, you can put them to work here. Probably do it at night, though. I doubt the locals would ...

The wuffers go first. Well, that’s not entirely true, I go first, since I can survive down there, for a while at least, without any help. Once I plunge myself back into the goop, I don’t descend this time, but wait as the entire contingent of wuffers is lowered down the tunnel after me.
All five hundred of them.
All mooshed together, they don’t appear like separate monsters at all, but rather one big, blobby, ball of cheeriness as they wuff wuff away, ...

I felt a little bit foolish listening to Advant a few hours later as she explained how our trek into the fifth was going to work. More specifically, as she outlined the many layers of protection the Colony had provided to keep us safe in that horrific environment.

Rushing forward in one great leap, I plunge my entire body into the atmosphere of the fifth. Despite the thrill of exploration, of taking part in another adventure in the Dungeon, I can’t say this is a pleasant experience. If I were to liken to anything, it’s like sticking my head straight into a toilet.
A toilet filled with acid.
My entire body burns. My carapace is on fire, my antennae are frying away, the joints in my legs are in immediate pain. Worst of all are my eyes. Th...

Rurin Wilkin wanted nothing more than to bury her face in her hands and scream. Failing that, a stiff drink would likely do the job. Or perhaps ten. Twenty if she was still conscious by then.
“Fuck you, Brom,” she growled, eyes roaming over the myriad of pages in front of her, “you knew to piss off the second it got hard!”
Advancing to gold in secret? No problem. Racing to gain levels out in the rift before she returned? Easy. Working with her old friends to overthr...

To my surprise, it’s Brendant, a soldier of the Council, who leads this expedition. Soft-spoken and reserved, she isn’t usually one to put herself forward for an operation like this, preferring to work diligently in the background. Not that I’m unhappy to see her, she’s steady and reliable, as well as powerful, being a tier six ant with maxed evolutions.
“Brendant, good to see you! Is this the whole force?”
She comes down accompanied by what appears to be five thousand...

It’s always fun to watch my three loyal friends stretch their ‘legs’ after an evolution. They’ve grown immensely in power, as is befitting a monster moving from the sixth to seventh tier. Unleashing them upon the monsters in those tunnels is like putting a group of wolves against a field of mice.
Despite their natural advantages, born with bodies that are stronger, faster, more mana-rich, these creatures do not have the advantage of maxed out, carefully considered evolutions.&nb...

It takes a little while to find Solant, because she is doing what she always does, running around the place sorting out everyone else's problems. She’s like an industrial strength iron, running over the military operation beneath the nest and pressing out every tiny wrinkle she comes across. It had been years since Tyron stepped foot in Woodsedge. The journey north took almost a week, even covering distance quickly with a Classed wagoneer. He was curious to see what the area looked like, post-break, if the damage would even be visible, or if enough time had passed for the land to recover.
It had not been enough time.
When the rift had broken open, hordes of monsters, including the largest, most powerful creatures, which couldn’t normally fit through, had entered thi...

Many members of the Council remain in the chamber to discuss the various issues plaguing the Colony across all the levels of our development. I remain among them for a while, just listening in and catching up on the issues beyond the range of my Vestibule. It would be nice if the organ had such tremendous range it would reach all the way to the surface. If that were possible, I’d know what was happening at every level of the family, even in the nesting chambers all the way up in the first.&...
